Hey Pata/v/ros, beat the demo and I’ve got mixed feelings. Did they indicate how close to “done” this was? My thoughts below:

Good
> voices/music not as annoying as teaser trailer, actually kinda dig the parade vibe
> you can set the game to use Patapon style beats which allow for desyncing, basically mandatory to have a good time for anyone who’s played the original
> it’s basically Patapon with a controllable hero which is neat; I think there’s a potential lot of frantic energy to be had with keeping the beat and moving your Ratatan around hazards

Mixed
> Visual design/polish lacking a bit, especially with base upgrades
> Roguelike elements poorly explained and swingy; without power leveling your time through the first world can be a breeze or a slog depending on Ratakaruka
> 9 Cobun max seems low
> Weird your Ratatan doesn’t attack/so much beyond a passive buff; would be nice if it did something per song so it’s not just a moveable liability
> 3 beats and all same button is weird; but since playing locks you in place probably necessary
> same world progression will be boring; hope the main game has routes/different options
> no eugenics?
> lack of explanation of commands/mechanics/story (prob just demo things)

There’s other small QOL stuff but that’s the big things after playing today. So far like a 6/10, hope the main game is a bit more along than this.

Honestly not a bad idea, Patapon 1+2 still slap to this day. Ratatan has potential but right now it’s more like a weird tech demo with rhythm than a full meal. Less “PATA-PATA-PATA-PON!” and more “please hit triangle at the right time or lose half your Cobun to a mole.” Might be worth revisiting post-launch if they buff the telegraphs and actually explain what the hell a “beat spiral reversal” is. Until then, stay comfy in the Pataverse.

It occurs to me they have done the contrary to what they did qith Patapon.
Patapon is stilistically very simplistic because it was in the PSP and the bidget was tight; Ratatan on the other hand is stupidly over the top wich makes the gameplay harder.

Yeah, now they patched everything to be properly guardable except if you're using hustle techs which you should be using only when you know it's safe anyway. At first many attacks came out of nowhere and you had to learn the pattern of the monster itself down to every beat to know what to do.

Patapon effect. You immediately think the chanting is gonna get annoying but all the songs are so earnest and mesh with the gameplay so its hard not to get drawn into them. (they could probably tone down the chanting in the hub a little I like it better when it gets a little muted in the shop menus)

Yeah, so much so that if you play them you'll understand a lot of things people criticize in ratatan were implemented way better in patapon.

The first is an amazing little game, imo it has the best direction and general consistency of the three.
The second is like the first but with more levels, one hero unit and the story becomes more grandiose, sacrificing some of the feel of the first.
The third is divisive (even though i liked it) as the story becomes more jrpg-y and you control only 3 units and a uberhero. The real flaw of this one is that it's balanced around multiplayer so if you play solo you need to grind a lot(!!) before being able to do some levels.

You understand that that means you have to recognize and react what is going on within a quarter of a second and also know what exact song you want to pivot to, right? You also might be locked into a specific song that cannot pivot to the jump or block so you need to wait the entire score before you get to reorient to a different song. Squiddly Pete is the definition of why this is an issue because he can go from attacking you to an instant charged tentacle and if your actions were on different timings that allows him to get the tentacle out before you can actually get to the second note of the new score.

I'm so fucking glad this is a furfag game because I'm a huge furfag now

The gameplay in the originals feels wayy tighter in that it feels like you're taking turns with the bosses, if you mess up after knowing the tells its always gonna be on you. Overall its a bit slower and more deliberate and quite a bit harder at times (theres a few missions in each game that are nightmarish on the first clear)

Managing your troops also feels a bit more meaningful since if they die on missions they're gone till the end (sometimes permanently if their cap gets eaten) plus upgrading them feels more meaningful but I'm guessing tweaking your cobuns will feel a lot better in the full game.

Huh? You mean the advanced controls? I thought they were the same as default, just 4 beats instead of 3. Honestly wish there was an option to ditch the measure and just make it work like in the original games, with interrupts and shit.

Funnily enough that was shown in the concept art and we know that they should have special skills, like Keroronpa calling an airstrike, i think. Probably demo things again.

Hard to say because this is must a demo (copefag etc.) but if the idea of commanding a legion of murderous cute jimbos with sone relatively in-depth customization through the power of rhythm is appealing then get off /v/ and play Patapon ASAP.

Pretty sure 1+2 are getting a remaster, honestly that’s the way to go anyways as 3 needs multiplayer and is the weakest in the trilogy. None are roguelikes either so you’ll get a genuine story with map/world progression and a fair amount of content.
