1 definitely

1 is a linear story-driven campaign, and orks make for cool enemies, with lots of gore and impactful headshots and such.

2 continues the story, and while it's alright, it's just not as good. Tyranids aren't as interesting to fight, they don't feel as good to kill either. It's also designed and balanced more for repeated co-op playthroughs of the missions. You return to base after each mission, there's no linear continuity between them the same way there was in 1, they all have these contrived live service style objectives, defend this point, survive the waves etc. First game has these too, but they're not as in-your-face.

Orks have zero personality in SM1. They fucked up their portrayal completely, all they do is scream "spees muhreens" and that's it. A massive downgrade from DoW1&2. On top of that they mostly have cancerous shooting units and their elites are designed so poorly you have to backroll from them endlessly and shoot in the face. Tyranids with Hive Mind were done better in SM2 with their psychic backslash, hordes, attacking in unison etc
In general SM2 has
>6 classes instead of 3. And there will be even more
>More Weapons
>Massively improved melee combat where you are actually invulnerable during finishers and have blocking and parrying mechanics that allow you to duel even elite enemies. Cover shooting for which SM1 was infamous is no more
>More enemy types and they are more varied as well
>Both Tyranids being better than Orks and Tsons being better than CSM
>Dedicated coop mode has proper, handcrafted, unique and diverse missions instead of a shitty featureless box that was that garbage, low effort Exterminatus mode
>Campaign can be played in coop, is longer and with more diverse and interesting missions
>Multiple unique boss fights across two game modes, meanwhile SM1 has qte boss at the end lol
>The one boss fight from SM1 against Ork Warboss is inferior to a generic Monster fight like Carnifex or Helbrute from SM2. L4D/Vermintide style monsters are another class of enemies that was added in SM2 and which is absent in SM1.
>Even dialogue, story and writing is superior in SM2. Titus actually devises plans and commands units with other marines doing something as well. SM1 made Titus a captain and then did nothing with it
There isn't a single thing SM1 does better. You just have to suffer and slog through it to get to SM2. SM1 was always a bad, overrated game so it's impressive how much did those slavs improved on the formula. Series easily went from 6/10 to 8/10 in a sequel. Only issue is with how separated Campaign is from Operations

>6 classes
And a campaign so short you won't get/want to try most, let alone unlock any upgrades. It's all designed as live service slop. If you don't engage with it, you miss out on vast majority of the content, even in the single-player campaign.
>More weapons
see above
>Improved melee
And enemies that don't work with that system
>More enemy types
Didn't feel that way, not when they all look the same anyway
>Tyranids better than orks
Nah
>Co-op mode/campaign
The only good thing I'll give this game, although it's still the same short campaign and a couple extra missions, and you're still expected to grind them over and over. I actually liked the SM1's horde mode more just because it was a pure combat experience where you get to try out new stuff with no downtime and can easily quantify if you did better or not. Half of the time spent in the missions is just running from area to area.

And you completely skipped how PvP is a massive downgrade in SM2, 6v6 max and all maps are literally the same.

It's been a while since I played SM1, but I at least remember having fun with it. I did not have fun in SM2, I dropped it as soon as I finished the campaign, which I really had to push myself through. It just felt way more gamey and contrived.

At this point you could remove xenos from 40k entirely and a vast majority of the fanbase would just go "Oh well" before going back to talking about Marines. Xenos representation doesn't really matter.

>And a campaign so short you won't get/want to try most, let alone unlock any upgrades
You don't have to grind for anything in Campaign, it works like SM1 which is unfortunate because all those campaign missions are stuck in this one and be done with it game mode without replay value provided by classes, weapon varieties, perks on both weapons and classes, AI director and hordes instead of preplaced enemies etc
>It's all designed as live service slop
Utterly meaningless buzzword
>see above
This doesn't explain anything. There are more weapons, both melee and ranged ones, than in SM1. And on top of this they have variants and perks that can drastically change their playstyle
>And enemies that don't work with that system
They do, unlike in SM1. Relic is an RTS developer which had no idea how to design Action games, so it's not surprising. They wanted to combine melee and ranged combat and then put it into a game where they could boast about not making a cover shooter. And they utterly failed to do so
>Didn't feel that way, not when they all look the same anyway
They literally don't, wtf? SM1 has mostly lazy reskins of those same melee and shooting units and that's it. Basic unit and then Basic unit, but stronger. That's the extent of SM1 enemy variety. SM2 has drastically different enemies in few different categories, with unique attack patterns and abilities. Invisible Lictor which can pin you down Hunter/Eshin Assassin style is literally nothing like two flying Zoanthropes shielding each other.
>Nah
SM2 better portrayed Tyranids than SM1 did Orks
>although it's still the same short campaign and a couple extra missions
They are longer than SM1, on three distinct planets, with huge variety even within those planets
>grind them over and over
You play because it's fun
>Half of the time spent in the missions is just running from area to area.
Enemies are everywhere and spawning if need be

There are 5 MP maps in SM1, 4 in SM2. They are more varied in SM2

It's not just the red. Some of the orks with guns would have yellow shoulderpads, making them stand out, and they also just have black pads now.
It's not just weird it's bizarre, as the game is mostly grays and blacks and part of the reason the original had these color schemes was to make it easier to see and respond to enemies.
