Was the DECADE of hype justified? Initial fan response was extremely positive, with the largely negative professional reviews receiving a lot of criticism, but the game seems to have since been forgotten.

No. Overgrowth is what you get when the MAN from "hire this man!" memes is tasked with making an entire game by oneself instead of only the engine.

All mechanics, no content.

the hand to combat is superb, still without equal.
everything else was unfinished jank ... needs another 10 years development time

It was impressive tech back in 2010, not impressive enough when it eventually released to carry a game on it's own

Like shit I thought THIS was cool enough to save and keep for 15 years back when they showed it off

Remember when 4chan didn't even have video support?

This game still feels empty and unfinished, I bought it recently and refunded right after. The community is dead, there are no fun mods, and after more than 10 years it just feels tiresome.

The start was cool and promissing.
You gotta understand that 2008 was quite a long time ago it predated the wave of terrible indie titles so apart from spore and fable we weren't used to operate on bullshit until proven otherwise reasoning

>spend a literal decade making your game
>all that decade was spent on was making slight changes to the physics and graphics systems and ultimately it has less content than Lugaru does
What the fuck was he thinking

Didn't the developer try to sue Steam, or am I thinking about a different game?

All I recall about this game is the leg cannon feeling a lot worse than Lugaru's, and then entering some swampy platforming level where the fog was bugged to shit and visibility was reduced to nothing. I uninstalled and never looked back

Wolffire games are very good at making engines and base gameplay then they ALWAYS without fail give up on the actual making a game part and leave it unfinished or half assed to move on to the next game and wonder why no one is buying. (overgrowth, receiver 2)

To be fair, when making games it's usually more fun to tinker and refine the base mechanics, rather than actually making the content. Messing with mechanics can be something quick and iterative, but actually making content worth playing with the implemented mechanics tends to be a grind.
