What happened to skill-based multiplayer games?

>MOBAs are essentially one huge knowledge check with RNG thanks to teammates, without even going into ELO autism
>SBMM means every FPS game is just a grind to 50-50 WL rate before you're trapped in a neverending cycle
>BRs and extraction shooters blatantly reward queueing up with a group instead of playing solo, with zero workaround
>Fighting games sacrificed neutral game to be just about meter management and dial-a-combos
>Racing games are either no fun allowed party games or simslop where a single second of lag means you automatically lose
>MMOs don't even pretend to be about skill anymore since whales can just buy their way to the top and invalidate everyone else's hard work

I could go on but you get the idea.

Ranked queues and 'competetive' online games are designed to get you addicted and spend more time on the game. If you spend more time on it, you'll likely spend more money. They've never been about competetive balance, that's all fantasy.

Everything is skill-based nowadays, just give me a solid casual multiplayer experience again. Halo's been dead for years and it fucking sucks.

>install [live service game that contributes to the problem]
I'd sooner play TF2 because at least that still has remnants of community servers

MWO is pretty tough, if you can get past the 12 year old graphics its gameplay is very solid.

In short, normalfags aren't interested in actual skill-based multiplayer games

Matchmaking happened.
Turns out, people don't actually like skill-based gameplay. They just like shitting on people who are less skilled than themselves. When they are forced to play with people at their same skill level, all of the sudden the game's not fun anymore.

If you can't go over a 50% winrate in games with skill based matchmaking you are just a shitter.

Pretty much, and major corporations ruined it. When it was an organic byproduct of the community it was more soulful. Once game developers began implimenting official 'leagues' and it became all about money, it died. Kind of like anything: once big money get's involved and it becomes about profit and margins the average fan who built it loses interest.

The reality is no one cares about your skill at a game. Even something that is often viewed with higher 'prestige' like chess. I worked with a guy who had been GM in Chess and all anyone ever said about it was 'oh, cool'. Like who gives a shit? So you were obsessed enough over this niche thing to get really good at it, no one cares. You'd be better of learning to play guitar, at least girls will find that interesting and you can play for them.

On the contrary, they make a shitload of money on micro transactions. Games like Rocket League, CS GO, LoL, Dota, Rivals etc are like money printing machines

But it's giving something to someone: "I'm playing guitar for this girl/audience" whatever. Both you and the listener benefit. Hitting a high MMR in Chess or Starcraft is doing something for yourself. And it's okay doing something for yourself, and they aren't mutually exclusive: you can be good at chess and guitar. But if you had to pick between the two I would pick the one that is more personally expressive and 'real' if you will.
