What has made the reviews shift to be so negative? I'm a huge MH fan, but I skipped Wilds because of the awful performance, but last I heard people who could play it were pretty happy with it. I know the numbers were down, but I just sorta figured it was a natural lull until expac dropped, was it something specific, or are people just generally coming to the conclusion it sucks?

All of the changes from world and later killed it. Dripfeeding content, having little to no content in the base games to justify the dripfeed, having shitty event quests, having dozens of paid dlc cosmetics and barely any unlockable unique or crossover cosmetics like Generations and earlier. Making the games piss easy and calling casualization features quality of life. All of these things destroy replayability and people forget about the game in a month. Even the updates are retaining less interest than Rises TUs did. On top of that High Ranks story didnt release complete.

Monster Hunter is dying a slow death through monetization schemes and its fucking sad.

Sequels don't sell based on how good they are, they sell based on how good the previous game was. If this game is shit (I have no idea, haven't played it) then it should be fine for now, but hurt the sales of the next one. Even Mass Effect: Andromeda and Dragon Age: the Veilguard sold fairly well, but they demolished any hope the next game might have.
