It got shilled by a bunch of big streamers and Vtubers. Combine that with accessible babyfood controls and a ranked mode that makes you climb to "Master" over time no matter what.

It's marketing by way of modern controls
Modern controls enables people who haven't played a lot of fighting games to not look and more importantly not feel completely terrible at them, which means when they pay vtubers and e-celebs who don't have experience with fighting games to play SF6 they both have more fun and make the game look better which leads to more of their fans wanting to play it.

Unironically the fat stacks in tournaments, and the extremely polish and marketing. The tourno cowards wont bite the hand that feeds them and straight up say that the game is dogshit gameplay wise, but they "try" to softball it with kinder words, because people have starting to realize it.

As I said, they softballing it. If they were more vocal about it, perhaps capcom would have removed throw loops in this patch. There are more problems than throw loops in this game though, which makes it irredeemable
