Why were 2000s games just so much better?

They weren't. The early 3D era was the worst time in gaming history, by far. Nothing but garbage games everywhere. It absolutely killed video games. We're still recovering from its effects.

For online games, server browsers and the lack of "friend/groomer group chat" apps like Discord in particular. If you were on a Vent or Teamspeak it was usually for a server you were on otherwise everyone would just be bantering in game, where there would be no AI moderated voice chat.

Because women were still gate-kept out of the industry except for being booth babes at E3.
There's zero coincidence that the average quality of games plummeted straight down ever since this changed.

the 2000s were better because there were less third worlders online. the proliferation of internet access to the slums of jakarta and mumbai has been a disaster

Monitors were better for gaming. Today, your only option is OLED, and even then you won't get the same quality in motion as with CRT. OLED at least wins in some areas, such as contrast, but if you go for LCDs, they lose out to CRTs even in that respect.
