The devs had no clue WHAT to make splatoon for a good while.
It was literally a block shooting ink.
Which eventually turned into rabbits.
Which just...kinda was meh.
Miyamoto offered them the ability to use Yoshi which they were iffy on. But also suggested that a game about shooting ink starring rabbits is a very bizarre choice...which swiftly lead to inklings and octolings.

Having a shooter were gyro isn't just optional it's basically required was pretty ballsy. But it paid off.
Turns out the Nintendo crowd is willing to experiment with new control schemes.
And now: more and more games even on Playstation come with gyro aiming support. (I.e. Monster Hunter, since Rise including Wilds, has native gyro support even on PC)

Which always makes Microsoft look hilariously more behind the times for just REFUSING to add a gyroscope to their controllers (a component that costs $0.50 - $1 on industrial scale), they even never have a gyroscope available as an option in their polls of "which feature would you like to see in the future". So they are actively pretending it doesn't exist.

it's just unique in every way

not just mechanically which is of course the most important (it's one of the most genius game design idea ever and it doesn't get enough credit for that) but in terms of looks, tone, and even the way it does gaas with the free update model and the way it treats its world seriously to push players to come back to it with regular celebrations involving idols etc

also inklings are just classic designs, on the level of other nintendo mascots

Damn near perfect gameplay and exciting innovation wrapped in the coolest presentation possible. That's about the simplest way to put it, everything about it was executed almost flawlessly and people have been hooked ever since. As much as people call Nintendo rehashers for relying so much on Mario, Zelda, Kirby, etc; they do tend to have experimental new IPs each console gen. Some like ARMS come and go in a flash where they may have enough of a cult following to get referenced in Smash Bros, but every now and again there is a Pikmin or a Splatoon that seems to hit it out of the park on the first go and gets welcomed in as one of Nintendo's main IPs.
