The global chat, custom games people would come up with ("zombie" mode with vamp, switch teams and use knife when killed), "chill" servers and the rest of the regular game was pretty cool. Character customization was pretty decent and there was an interesting variety of skills to unlock too.
You can still play it if you can emulate it, but as the other anon says, you're basically just going to be going up against the sweats just looking to insta-ping headshots since casual players are gone.

The biggest fuck ups were the Konami ID shit, and IIRC it had some goofy shit with the DLC splitting the playerbase.

No, every version of MGO was bad and a complete waste of time. Kojimbo could've put more content into the single-player than a niche "stealth" (lmao) multiplayer game that was just "who abuses auto-aim faster and better than the other."

I will give MGO3/MGS4 version props for the "sons of the patriots" system, that some other multiplayer titles should attempt to ape in regards to 3D spotting (grab an enemy and "interrogate" them to gain information on where their teammates are in the game world) and keeping players together (salute each other to know where your teammate[s] are in the game world).

But MGO just didn't work as a stealth multiplayer game.

The MGO2 community was the most toxic community I've ever been part of. It's where "get good" originated, not Dark Souls. Because saying "gg" after a match wasn't toxic enough, they had to tell the other players that it meant it "get good" and not "good game" as was traditionally understood up to that point.

Actually very true, I concede. Spies vs Mercs was really good and I'm sad we never got more games like it afterwards. You could absolutely abuse mercs in that mode and could talk to them in a grapple kek. However MGO2 was still pretty good for what it was.

DA SvM was significantly less complex than CT though. I assume it was a deliberate choice to try and make it more approachable since everyone said CT SvM was cool but barely anyone played it.

It was that good. People that complained MGS4 had too little gameplay; MGO2 was the place to really go to town with all the possibilities that the mechanics and systems had to give.

>but the laggers and the cheaters and the power-tripping community
Yeah there was that too, didn't care. I kept to TDM and Team Sneak mostly. Only downside was that one had to participate in the toxic events if you wanted to buy fashion items.

I fucking loved Survival. It's how a ranked competitive mode should be. Making it exclusive to several hours a day on certain days of the week was what made it special. Everyone who took the game seriously showed up for it and it made the rest of the game strictly casual.

It's funny how throwaway modes had way more content than modern games do now, and also almost all of these throwaway modes gave you skins and fashion for free just by playing the game. Now people buy a virtual helmet for $20 in a live service game that launches with almost no cosmetics lol.

Yeah it's pretty pathetic, and the excuse a lot of people give to game devs is that it would split the playerbase up, which is completely fucking retarded because if the community decides they like a certain mode more than others then they should be allowed to collectively make that decision.

Also needing to use 3rd party shit to get the expansions was weird

You remember wrong then, outside of surv or tourney there was no matchmaking just rooms, and there was no waiting for matches in surv or tourney either if you played in the same lobby as everyone else.

Fortnite does it, but like always people will not acknowledge any good thing this game does because 'lol children game"
