By not being so overweight that holding a button causes us to be out of breath.

It's called momentum. You can stop fast by jumping or pressing the other direction.

Better than double-tap > hold on the d-pad. It's a platformer, precision control is good

double tap to run/dash in a platforming game should be a federal crime.

I would assume almost nobody had difficulty with that, I certainly didn't. Fun game to 100% every few years.

Tip you can jump, hold down jump and run, and then press/release jump as needed. So I would hold down Y the whole time (unless I needed to release it for a more precise jump) and tap B with the base of my thumb

Why does 4chan only complain about this for World when 3 is much more inertia-heavy?

Your options are a one-button press toggle run/walk cycle or a held button. Holding allows more precision and putting it on a dedicated face button means it doesn't affect your movement input. Lrn2platform

Why is holding a button to run so standardized anyway? You literally have zero reasons to not just hold it every second of playtime. Why not just make the running automatic then? Yoshi's Island doesn't have a run button, it gave you a small moment of acceleration before reaching top speed and that game plays perfectly fine.

What scenario does Mario World present where walking is beneficial?

He could run by default since hes doing it so damn much & have the button make him walk when held. Could even go one step further & have yet another button toggle between the two styles so people can choose what they like or switch on the fly as they see fit.

Releasing run is beneficial when you want to shorten your jump. Can't think of many examples off-hand, but some of the water levels with Big Bertha where they try and mess up your jump timing so you fall in the water it's good for slowing you down before takeoff.
>>712520028
Sure. I think it makes more intuitive sense to have a button that speeds up than a button that slows down, but I never had had an issue with the run button either in any of the 2D Marios.

Mario has enough air control that you can adjust for overshooting jumps, you don't need walking for that. Removing the jump button would open more space for extra mechanics or specific controls, such as separating flying from jumping by having its own designated button, so if you're at full speed with the cape but don't want to fly, you can just jump normally.

I don't wanna reposition in the air tho if I don't have to.
>Removing run to dedicate a button to a single powerup
Not sure of examples where Mario is at full speed I don't wanna fly with the cape. Seems like a solution in search of a problem. There'd be nothing wrong with it, just seems like swapping out one niche-case use for another. But I like mine more.

Correct. I have literally never heard someone ever complain about holding the run buttons in Mario games in 30 years. It's a nonissue. Here we could be talking about our favorite Marios instead.
