Unironically, what do you think it's the reason why Dragon's Dogma failed to attract a big audience, especially since Action RPGs with open worlds are such a big thing these days? What did Capcom do wrong with the IP?

I actually blame RE Engine far more than Itsuno

1 didn't sell well because it released in 2012 when everyone was still playing TW2, Skyrim, and Dark Souls.
2 did sell well but it was ugly and unfinished as fuck.

Capcom clearly had no interest in trying to push it as an IP, throwing DD2 under the bus to make way for MH6. DD2 isn't a bad game either, it's just heavily unfinished.

it has too many weird UI and QoL features for a western audience. it takes a real weeb to appreciate the lolis despite this amount of jank. like the they are masterworks all line, who thought it would be cool and immersive?

Gameplay is too slow and enemies are too east and near formulaic in how you approach them. This is by far their main weakness

DD1 was in a crowded year and it's genre was too similar to Dark Souls and Skyrim: two of the most culturally successful games made that have lived rent free in everyone's head for 15 years.
But even if it didn't have those competitors, it was a flawed game. It was just retarded in too many ways
>unconventional NPC dialogue system, so people don't even realise it has complex NPCs with personalities
>deliberately obscurant (artificial difficulty mayhaps) mechanics where "you're supposed to fail" or it's "supposed to suck"
eg. no fast travel combined with quickly respawning trash mobs along the main highways combined again with quests that ask you to backtrack.
>deliberately obscurant quest system and quest-dependencies where you can easily fail things simply because the game doesn't tell you stuff
Oh but don't worry, you can get it right on NG+ ;) Except I'm not going to fucking play a game for another 60 hours if it doesn't get the first 20 right.

So the game comes across as an autistic combat game, because that's mostly all that remains after a janky development process, and the more emotionally and psychologically satisfying storytelling and characters aren't presented properly.

DD2 was... too obviously shit for me to bother playing. I saw the writing on the wall about a month before release. I have no explanation to how they had a formula for what worked in DD1 (combat, vocations, items, worldbuilding, DA quality of life changes) and then managed to not repeat those successes, whilst also not fixing the things that clearly didn't work in DD1.
Fucking retarded devs is all I can say.

Dragon's Dogma ended up attracting a big audience, which explains the initial sales of DD2. By making a painfully mediocre game, Capcom, ironically, killed the goose that would've laid golden eggs.

I think it just got overshadowed by monster hunter. The base game DD2 does have issues in the late game and the bad performance probably didn't help either. If capcom had actually put in the resources to make DD2 great it would have worked but they moved the team over to monster hunter and that worked even better. The game sold like crazy but it also meant that DD2 died on the vine.

DD2 had the chance to pull a no man's sky if they kept working on it. Could've become one of the best games of the last decade if they just added more content and fixed the performance.

Not enough content, and the map design REALLY sucks. Somehow they made the same massive mistake twice in a row. The stuff it had going for it, like combat and physics, just weren't enough to hold the rest up.

Even then, with how little NEW there was to combat since it was a ton of reused moves and no new attack buttons/combos, it got boring pretty quick. I think Crimson Desert is everything I wanted Dogma 2 to be.

1 was a blatantly unfinished game that attracted a niche fanbase
2 promised to be a finished version of 1, but it wasn't, actually removed shit from the first title, and had literally none of the charm that kept diehards engaged with 1 for so long

I'm huge fan of the first game and I didn't buy 2 because I knew I wouldn't be able to run it at respectable framerate and resolution on my PC. Plus I knew the PS5 version was also gonna be borked.

They made the exact same mistake they did with DD1.Made an unfinished and unpolished game and didnโ€™t take advantage of its huge potential. I accepted the failings of 1 because despite all the stupid shit in that game, it had some charm too. Anyone ever tried to fight a Golem with pawns as a mage? Fucking sucks, i had to punch the damn thing to death. Retarded pawns. Anyway, for DD2, they had all the time and data on how to get it right this time. I donโ€™t know how they managed it but they made it a worse game overall. Fuck you Capcom.

Not every game needs to attract a massive audience. It's OK for games to just be small successes or moderately successful.
