Quake is the name of a character from one of iD's D&D campaigns that inspired the game.

all their characters represented a core stat with Quake's being STR
he used a big hammer that could knock over buildings, hence 'quake'

its a mistranslation- the english version of QUAKE had a poor localization, and in japan the characters name was "Quat'" short for kumquat which the main character was inspired by.

I dunno. Ask John Romero.
It's because the character in question was armed with a giant hammer that caused earthquakes. The hammer was supposed to be a weapon in the game, but Carmack deemed it too stupid, much to Romero's annoyance.

insanely kino game in the audiovisual department in general. the very risky, but tasteful dark ambient soundtrack is a bold, but very powerful choice for hte games aesthetic. very one-of-a-kind game.

We'll never get a modern Quake reboot.
We are stuck with DOOM till the end of days. Best case scenario, we'll get those boring Strogg Wars again, while I want gothic castles and Cthulhu.

Quake was originally an RPG, but id had constant arguments on how to make it work. In the end they gave up and turned all the assets they made into an FPS because they knew how to do those.
It's why everything feels a bit "off", and it works because the theme is lovecraftian horror anyway.
Quake was going to be the name of the MC, but they changed it to being the US military codename for whatever was behind the monsters attacking (Shub-Niggurath, but the expansions imply Quake is above even her).

yeah its definitely not happening especially after doom the dark ages. a new quake would be virtually identical except with quakeguy and more lovecraftian entities rather than outright demons.

I dunno. For me Dark Ages felt more Hexen with demons than outright Quake.
Quake had this very grungy, oppressive atmosphere that make you felt the game itself hates you. Not to mention some really bizarre enemies. Dark Ages doesn't really capture that.
I miss the shambler:(.

Indeed. You hear the teleport noise and that distinct shambler roar and you know you're in trouble. When you're used to quake you just slog through the enemies without thinking, but the shambler exists to fuck that rhythm and make you wake up. And it's not even a difficulty thing, nuDoom has hard enemies too but the feeling of seeing one is more of a "fuck off, I'm sick of your shit" and not "oh god."

It does modify some of the more bullet spongy enemies to be more of a threat. Some of the enemy buffs from the expansions like Tanks leading their rockets and Brains actually being dangerous are now standard too. And Berserkers now have the cut content attack where they leap and slam their hammer arm on the ground to create a damaging shockwave.

Technically Quake Champions officially connected Quake 1 to Quake 2 and I don't mean because there's Quake 1 and 2 stuff in the game, but rather Strogg's (the character) story directly mentions the Makron in communication with Shub-Niggurath. But otherwise yes, the new Quake 2 episode overtly shows the connection between 1 and 2 and even has a Shambler boss fight.
