The problem is that the entire game was built and balanced around knockout tour. Bagging isn't as much of a viable thing there because once you get down to about 12 or 8 racers front running becomes more viable and a golden won't be enough to guarantee first. It's just that normal races aren't balanced with this in mind.

I personally loved it and found the gameplay much more enjoyable than MK
But I can't speak for anyone else because I see everyone fucking hate it and compare it unfavorably to MK, so it's likely you will too
As the only person who genuinely thought it was perfect, the reasons are:
-While there are obviously better characters, they do all feel different and like they offer something. Switching from chocoboy to chocogirl is night and day, you go from fast as fuck flying off every curve, to slow but hugging the inside easily, yet I liked both equally
-The tracks are well designed, there are straights that favour the faster characters and very very tight turns that you're certain to fall off of with those same characters unless you hit the brakes hard, it's obscenely hard to stay on the road you can't just go max speed is what I'm saying
-It has a "knockout tour" style 64 player elimination mode, however instead of straight lines with no loading screens it's more like a grand prix where the top 4 qualify like tournament brackets, until a final race for the top 8
-Didn't bother with the story mode
-The items are all really cool, you get 3 slots but there are 3 levels of items, so level 2 takes up two slots and 3 takes three. Picking up a duplicate (higher chance if you're holding) levels it up, for example the fireball that acts as the green shell on lvl1, but red shell on level 2. My favorite is the portal that warps you ahead, but other people can also use your portal, and if they take the exit portal they warp back lmao
-I don't remember any blue shell equivalent.
-There's not an obvious racing line as the "coins" (which also charge your super move) and the boosters or items are usually spread apart and are all valuable especially depending on the situation
-Adorable menu music (if playing in japanese)

I played hours of this every day for a year and enjoyed every second, even when getting decimated. And I fucking hate final fantasy.

I played some last night with some friends and I felt like 24 characters is too much. Especially how there's so many characters bouncing between 1st and 10th place. You can legit get hit by 4 items in a row a lot more frequently, everyone has bob-bombs and the stupid boomerang and your placement yo-yos way more than usual.

But at the same time there seems to be a lot more skill expression in this game so I like that part.
