What are you doing in between? That's where the bulk of the gameplay kicks in. I find the moments you described as a crucial part of settings things up: first, choose the mission, select your gear, organize your inventory and go on your journey. The delivery is essentially "getting paid".
I just think DS is not for you, and tbqh is not for the majority of people, and that's fine. The game has clearly a fair shared of weird stuff in it.
