Five years after the release of the PS5, 50% of PSN users were still on the PS4, meaning that people no longer see consoles as something you need to buy immediately, but as shitty closed PCs, and they will only replace them when the old console starts showing signs that it is no longer capable of running the most interesting games.
In fact, this even affects the Switch. The Switch 2 was a sales success because the Switch 1 user base was extremely tired of such outdated hardware, which Nintendo held onto for eight fucking years. The new device was released with a single big exclusive game, yet it sold extremely well just because a large portion of players were desperate to upgrade, even if it was to play the same games they were playing before.
In other words: consoles today just need to provide access to as many games as possible (even old ones), even without major new AAA exclusives, and they will sell, as long as the price isn't obscene.
