I played the original after the hardcore re4 remake went through. I have something to say.
The original definitely has charm, perhaps thanks to the HD Project mod, but the gameplay? He's worse at everything and ten times easier. There are fewer enemies, knife does not break, weapon does one-shot more often, tank control does not make game deeper or more tactful. I like the characters, but Louis has more charisma in the remake and is more beautiful there, Ada too. Why do boomers always lie when they say it used to be better? It pains me to tell you, but the original is an alpha-beta version, and the remake is the final finished product.

No, I disagree.
Understand that Re4 OG is more of a genre mash of a TPS and a Beatemup.
Whereas Re4make is more of a survival horror that is looking to make sure players have more uncertainties in outcomes (like RE 1, 2, and 3) in order to preserve tension that was lost from the inclusion of being able to move while shooting and reloading, being able to run while turning the camera to look behind you, and being able to parry melee strikes.
This is why:
>Leons movement is more sluggish and not as instant in Re4make (look at how sluggish his acceleration into a run, transition from shooting to running, and recovery frames from a melee attack, landing from a jump, and enemy hits are) compared to OG Re4 (and even Re2make).
>There is bloom and harsher weapon sway in Re4make vs OG Re4 (even with weapon sway being harsher in the modern ports compared to the OG hardware, Re4make is way more punishing)
>Headshots don't instantly reward you with an enemy stagger into a melee attack.
>Enemy attacks and grabs track the player in order to force players into parrying and crouch dodging.
>Enemies are faster and more immediately aggressive in general
>There are MORE enemies in OG Re4 compared to Re4make
>Melee hitbox is shrunken down compared to OG Re4
>The knife is a resource instead of a tool for constant use
>I-frames on recovery from using melee was shrunken in order to make you more defensive.
Re4 is more about reactive positioning thanks to your commitment to attacks and how generous the game is with enemy stunning, where as Re4 remake is moreso about strategically moving while managing your resources
The point being:
>Do you want to be hyper aggressive and styling on enemies like you're in Wrestlemania?
>Or clawing for that one little turn in the fight that may give you the upperhand like your John Wick?
Whichever you find better depends on your mood and taste.

Objectively easier. I fell for the meme and went with hardcore on my first playthrough of re4r - sheer horror.

Cant forget that this also kills some of the skill expression you could do with movement and enemy herding from Re4OG. The spacing game is more about dealing with Leons sluggishness and the RNG from headhsots than it is about being able to shimmy grabs and flank enemies

Or how the tracking on attacks and grabs force you into more "Simon-Says" responses where it becomes more about memorizing timing than it is about manipulating the enemies and your spacing.

a lot of what you said is subjective. the original game already has a charm regardless of the HD project (which is based). If you compare certain areas side by side the older games all had better ambience in a lot of areas just do to the lighting. older games would prelight areas manually for maximum dramatic/artistic effect. the remakes dont always get this. its a small detail but in resident evil its the small details that sell the atmosphere.

i dont remember the enemy count being noticeably different. ill take your word for it though. the original was well balanced maybe they give you more ammo or something in the new game to make up for it.

the knife wasnt something i typically used unless it was the start of the game or i was low on ammo. i never used it enough in the game to feel like i was cheesing anything but thats my playstyle.

weapons should one shot as much as they do in the original if not more. a headshot is a headshot. it would improve the game if headshots did more damage and they gave you less ammo in modern games.

i like the controls-they didnt need to modernize it as much in the new game i think they overcorrected.

i have no opinion on louis hes cool but ada looks way better in the original you are smoking crack if you think that.

leon also looks like he smokes meth in the new version. too many characters look like different people entirely.

It's objectively much easier than RE4 remake.

>tank control does not make game deeper or more tactful
it objectively does because you need to stand in place to shoot and reload which means you need to be far enough away from the enemies to do these things safely

idk why the game being easier is always brought up as some flaw, it feels good to play and remains engaging the whole way through so why is it an issue? do you think you would have the same issues with re4remake if you went back and played it on normal difficulty?

All of these. When these kinds of factors are in play, it doesn't matter to me that the remake is more difficult, which it is. It's also just worse and every time I get the itch to replay it, I just remember that enemies don't behave consistently to gunshots like in the original, I remember the parrying which I hate as a mechanic, I remember that movement feels sluggish and less responsive and I just end up never replaying it. The combat just feels a lot shittier.
