Lv 50 in Gen 4 Factory is considerably more difficult than open level because the last trainer in a set pulls from a pool of pokes that you'd normally only see in the next set. This makes set 1 and 2 really difficult.

The way the factory works, if you choose level 50 the first 3 rounds you get shitmons and only starting on round 4 you get the fully leveled sets.
In level 100 you get the fully leveled pokemon from the start.
I think level 50 is easier overall.

The funny thing about the Factory rentals is how the groups are an inherent tier system. The shitmons like Huntail and Magcargo are only in the level 50 group while anything half-decent is available in open level

If you don't mind looking up the sets, there's both a spreadsheet with the sets and a battle calculator with all the emerald factory sets in it already.
In level 50, as the other anon said, up to set 7 the pokemon in that set will always be the same so if you only care about getting the gold symbol you shouldn't have to deal with figuring out which mon you have in front of you.
In level 100 you get every single possible pokemon out there starting on set 5.

Starmie with Hydro Pump, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt and Psychic can take out a good chunk of potential enemies.
Snorlax with Curse, Return/Double Edge, Earthquake and Shadow Ball is a solid physical option.
