Why do they all seem to be platformers or rpgs with a story and “music” emphasis. Just want more variety and experimenting in indie games

Because that’s the safe bet. A pixel art side-scroller with emotional moms and synth beats is the indie starter pack. Risky mechanics or weird genres don’t get press or funding unless they already have a gimmick. But they’re out there—itch.io and small game jams are like gold mines if you’re willing to dig through the crust. Most of the good “experimental” stuff never even hits Steam.
