I love ff9 but im rooking forward to the demake because holy shit is it the worst one to replay. Extremely slow and simplistic combat and was made during the strategy guide era so its filled with missables. Tetra master is unintuitive and rng. You're also punished for levelling up before all party members and stat boost equipment are available (which the game doesn't hint at anywhere) so its optimal to just...not play the game til like disk 2(?) Basically all of my gripes are gameplay related but the setting, music and characters are all great. Announcement any day nowa

Interesting, another guy who "loves" an old game while simultaneously shitting on it to plug a remake. I wonder where we've seen that before?

It's possible to love a game while acknowledging it's flaws. I've never played 9 but his complaints sound reasonable at face value.

Does it? I think it's reasonable to want an updated version of the game that addresses flaws with the original. It rarely ends up working out in a good way, but simply wanting a remake doesn't really invalidate criticism.

I'm aware, that's why I pointed out it doesn't usually work out for the better. OP loves the game and wants a remake that fixes outdated mechanics, that's not a bad thing in and of itself.

the battle screen takes forever to start. but the battles themselves are only as fast as your party members' speed stat
and if you actually enjoyed jrpg's back then, then you wouldnt really need a guide cause pretty much everything is there if you just explore

I get OP completely. Personally I love Silent Hill more than anyone on planet earth, but let's be real here, the "classics," that is 1-3, actually kinda suck. I'm so happy Konami is remaking them for the modern era. Now we get much better gameplay, writing, and voice actors like Troy Baker!

Yes and that's what makes it a slog, it's just press Attack to win. 7 has the same problem too but mix and matching materia at least gives you the illusion of "builds."

It's not solely the battle screen or ATB speed, animations and wind-up time are extremely slow and abilities have a sort of queue system as to not overload the PS1 I'm assuming, so you can have a character just standing around waiting even after several "turns" have passed.

atb fills up in those inbetween moment for both sides. if the party is spamming long animation abilities, then it's possible that one of the slower characters may get caught up waiting whilst the enemy gets to squeeze in another shot

>slow
yeah kind of
it's still faster than 7 and 8 with no wait and battle speed set to max, just speed through the initial battle animation on emulator
>simplistic
lol no. it still has some of the most unique rpg interactions in turn based RPG history. it's simple yet deep, not simplistic. there's so much variety to every zone and its array of monsters you never really get bored of it.
the game is pretty engaging and high iq. it's kind of surprising the gameplay designers were that into it. it's made for replays though
more rpgs should take notes explicitly from ff9, 13 and type 0. world class game design that doesn't really get topped, it's like a good ass steak in jarpig form

He complained about Tetra masters is being shitty and RNG, this is true and could use some fixing in a remake.
He complained about optimal ways to level your party being to just not play at all, which could use some adjustments in a remake.
He complained about retarded shit that you could never ever possibly figure out yourself like the Zodiak Speak in ff12, which should be fixed in a remake.

When did he say that the game is too complex?

I agree with you there. I like that it was less about which actions you take and more focused on rapidly switching paradigms to take advantage of certain bonuses. I.e. sen sen sen when a huge hit is about to come, or swapping your ravagers to commandos to stabilize a volatile stagger gauge.

I liked that none of the weapons were useless either, since they all upgraded into different passives depending on how you wanted to build that character.

they're also there just to let you replay the game and have some fun. no guide will actually help you get excalibur II btw that's all getting good.
"obtuse" game design gives these games their identity. you can also figure most of it out without a guide by just experimenting and actually playing the game.
thinking tetra masters is too RNG is literally a skill issue btw

Ff9's was bad though, the strategy guide just tells you to go to playonline.com. for everything. It's annoying cross referencing a web page every 10 minutes if you dont want to miss any of the MANY missables.

Most players would never even know it existed to have "fun" getting it. The only way you would know about it is if you purchased a guide in the first place. Excal II is in almost the exact same tier as the Zodiak Spear, in which you have to pay the $20 tax or hear about it from a friend that purchased the guide to even discover its existence.
I can't believe there's people so contrarian on /v/ that they defend this

So in what way is ff9 simplistic but deep because those are the characteristics I would assign FF13 specifically and its entire series. And what should be learned from ff9 specifically? if it really is one of the few JRPGs and especially Final Fantasy's to actual have merit to its gameplay then i am intrigued, and compelled to wonder if my experience with it was simply a matter of giving up on its shit boring garbage story too early, and it feeling too generically final fantasy, embodying all the same flaws the series never learns from.
