The more I can riff off of the systems and the setting to bring my character head-canon to life the more fun Im usually having.
I also think all of the best RPGs are filled with aha moments where decisions or mechanics synergize and react with things in unexpected ways.
I really want to be able to look at the game world, be able to come up with a character concept that makes sense in the setting, and be able to imagine what kinds of opinions and scruples and preferences that character would have, even if only in terms of how they fight, like making a good lore friendly build in Elden Ring or something, and then have the game respond to that accordingly.
I think all of the RPGs that have really stuck around in the collective memory have done so for exactly that reason. Certainly in mine.
