I think RE tries to be an anthology of sorts, never focusing on one specific type of horror, while all the horror games that followed it pull from only a single thread. Dead Rising is literally just an interactive Dawn of the Dead whereas RE5 for instance is like 5 different movies cobbled into one.

Not everything has to go back to a single franchise, I mean I like when a franchise evolves in a different direction or gets a spinoff but is also nice to leave the baggage behind and do something new, so that Ass Creed is its own thing instead of a prince of persia spinoff and Watch Dogs is its own thing instead of an AssCreed spinoff.
At least on a conceptual level even when I don't like the result.
