Why does (almost) every single MMO expansion have to be some world-threatening major event (usually brought on by a ooky spooky cult)?

Why can't we have some lower stakes shit like
>A murder happened in Hammerfell and now we need to help the local nobles solve it.
>The orc clans residing on Balor are at war and we need to help bring peace between them.
>We were hired to basically serve as the "Smiling Friends" for some Hobbit leader north of the Shire.
>Two archeology groups are racing to excavate some old Rataka ruins on Kashyyyk, pick one to help

MMO players want to feel like the greatest person on the planet. It's very hard to de-escalate and not have them feel like they were robbed, so these kind of stories are side quest material if they're to be added at all.

This happens in every form of media, man.
I think only Dragon Age Origins toned down but it turns out that one faggot near the end of the game is the one who started the entire plot with his bullshit.
