I have been getting into JPRGS lately (after years of avoiding them like the plague). I really like the mother series, but besides that I have only played ff7, which had a very engaging story up until the therapy session with tifa inside the baja blast.

At the moment I have my eye in Xenogears, FFIX and Crono trigger, but I am willing to hear other options.
Just no xenoblade because its the embodiment of everything I hate about anime, nor persona because the time I tried the third one I almost lost faith in humanity.

Chrono Trigger is kinda simple both in mechanics and plot especially compared to FF7 but it's all killer no filler, a legendary JRPG for good reason.

The plot is big planet parasite bad with extremely fast and loose time travel mechanics. It's narratively simple, compared with FF7 where the planet ending threat takes a backseat to themes of death and grief and examining the shattered mind of a loser who became his own delusion. FFIX is fun if you really like Final Fantasy and aren't expecting the greatest jrpg of all time like a vocal minority hypes it up as, but if you you want the FF nostalgia slop you should probably play the classic FFs first so you can at least point at the screen and go "I know what that is!" while basedfacing. The 3D remake of FF3 that gives it an actual cast of characters is pretty good.

SMT3/Nocturne and Strange Journey with its old school style dungeons with annoying teleport traps are recommended. Persona is just pure anime trash since the third one, dumb dating shit.

But honestly though Clair Obscur is an excellent game.

FF8 and FFX are good because of the gameplay (with the exception of card drawing). FF6 is still the best FF.

Then there are the Suikoden games. 1, 2 and 5 are the best ones. 3 and 4 can be skipped entirely.

Lufia 1 and 2 are great. So is Panzer Dragoon Saga.

Xenogears is easily top 3 GOAT and the story becomes rushed by the second disc as in a lot of it is just condensed and explained instead of letting you play and experience what was originally intended. All because of budget reasons and having to get the game out.

Demons Roots - it looks like an h-JRPG but the story is GOAT and better than almost anything released in the last decade. Deathpolca is my favorite JPRG protagonist.

I finished it, I just though the whole Cloud autoestime issues plot point was dissapointing.

I dont know how to feel about a game gaslighting me into thinking its better than it actually is. All of the "cloud is maybe not even real" shit was really cool but turns out it was just the villans being dickheads

Octopath Traveller 1 and 2 are pretty fun for the individual stories but finales leave alot to be desired.

Bravely Default games are nice but gameplay is way better for them if you like to experiment with classes (like FF5).

Other than the original release of the very first game where basically nothing other than direct damage abilities actually worked and buffs and debuffs either did nothing or had the opposite of their intended effect, there isn't any 'old jank' in the classic FFs that isn't also there in the PSX games.

I'm gonna recommend Live A Live (Remake or OG, both have their ups and downs) because the story is the reason I fell in love with the game. Just make sure if you do play it you go in blind and don't look anything up, no matter how rough Edo Japan gets. It's worth it.
Plus it's a brisk 20 hours if you know what you're doing, 25-30 if not, so it's not too big an investment.

All of that is in FF7. Most of it is in an optional cutscene that was added in the second version of the game in Japan (the version we got overseas), but it's there.

Skies of Arcadia is lighthearted but it's enjoyable.
