Fun game, but I got annoyed on the final boss that monstie special moves which hit multiple targets were useless on his last stage. Didn't have enough creatures at a good enough level with single target finishers to clear it, and couldn't be arsed to grind them.

I've wondered if the first game remake is any good, but most people seem to say the 2nd is better in all ways except not being able to change element

This part kind of reads not knowing how to play the game and blaming the game for it. Maybe I'm just a genius but I think not using any of the skill points until you breed or use a monster because the baby will get half of the unused points of each parent and if you pass down a skill the baby inherits half of the points put into it. So you can just not use any points and the baby will have like 60 at birth and you can just dump them into something. Or you can dump all the points into a parent's Frizz & Sizz and the baby will have frizz and maybe even Charring Slash. Also if you max it out the kid will be able to use the sequel Frizz and Sizz 2. And if debuffs are so unreliable (I can't recall them sucking that much), why not use buffs? It can't be that hard to find/make a monster with oomphle. And if you think the monster with it sucks you can just make a monster you do want and have the monster with the buffs somewhere in it's family tree.
A better DQM complaint is that monsters only have resistances, size (except in 3), and traits separating them. Every single monster can learn any move and get BUSTED stats with enough grinding and maybe a phoenix staff.
