It varies. I remember a ton of people being fine with the Crash remake at the time of release, but that was also 8 years ago (God how time flies) and many were just starved of content related to Crash so its somewhat understandable. I rarely hear good things about stuff like the Shadow of the Colossus remake, Demons Souls or Spyro ones mainly because they completely destroy both the artstyle and the way they play. I don't know enough about Resident Evil to comment on if people like those remakes or not. Certain remasters are also disliked like the Dark Souls or Gears of War 1 remaster.

The overwhelming majority of remakes and remasters don't need to exist. Especially ones you need to buy. If you owned the PS1 Crash trilogy, why are you buying the remake? I get remaking/remastering a game that is fundamentally broken or cannot be played anymore, and a few times remakes can actually be beneficial to a series' relevance. Sometimes it works out and doesn't destroy the original. Look at the 2005 King Kong which is basically a loveletter to the original but also good enough to stand on its own merits both from a technological and thematic standpoint. But then you look at every videogame remake in existence and the differences and problems are like night and day. Videogame culture has unfortunately embraced the idea of just remaking everything but worse.

The only things I would change with the original are the input lag (it's insane for a ps1 game) and the stupid deaths from badly telegraphed traps. Crash fails the "show the player a mechanic in safety first, THEN make them do it in danger." Two things the remake didn't fix and in fact made worse.

I'll play remakes on discount. I have nothing against them. But knowing that multiple millions of dollars could have been invested into new games, and that the remakes are charging full price for a familiar experience, doesn't inspire a lot of excitement. I liked Demon's Souls R, but I also got it for free. It wasn't worth 60 bucks for a graphical upgrade to something I'd already beaten once.

Aside from the rounded off Unity hitboxes, the Crash remake was fine. It was one of those "best you can hope for" releases, and it was obvious that Vicarious Visions wanted to do a good job. It was also released well before remasters became a core part of Sony's portfolio, so we weren't rejecting it out of a sense of contrarianism.
