You know what? The whole thing with characters wandering around painted scenes kinda sucks. Looks terrible. I've had so many of these games in my childhood and many are absolutely great but damn man this style looks awful.

The scenes are great. There is a lot of wonderful scenes and concepts and ideas out there. Some totally different and wild and wonderful worlds. But they just kinda look like shit with the mismatched polygons wandering around it.

Didn't the process need dozens of hours computing time per image back then? Nowadays we should get even better prerendered images. The way I see it, it's lightning that makes them look so good.

Nta except they're getting worse and worse. Now they're pushing garbage like Raytracing to kill performance. Modern devs think that a video game is like a Pixar movie and that everything should be running in real time and don't realize that video games were supposed to be illusions and that programming and visual trickery is what makes a game more impressive. It's almost a lost art form, especially now that everyone just uses Unreal Engine or Unity.

I think it looks great, I'm probably older than you and I would say there was a period when these pre-rendered background games were becoming tiring because we yearned for actual real time 3d graphics that looked as good to become the norm but at this point we have achieved and far surpassed that, so now it's all about style.

Based take. Not everything has to be a stupid war of which version is โ€œobjectivelyโ€ superior. OG has charm, REmake has atmosphere, both do different things well. Enjoying both is the true sigma mindset.

Exactly. Ue gives grants to devs that expand the engine. Not a single game created by this grant is worth playing, nor did it improve gaming big picture.

RE1 was very early in PS1's lifecycle. SH is a late release. Also RE3 is gorgeous and BTFOs even CV in visuals

Most people jerking off to pre-renders weren't alive back then and only do so to sound more interesting.

I was alive, as was many of my peers, and I loved them back in the day, and I love them now.

Well made pre-rendered visuals + good cinematography (perspective and framing of scenes, lighting, overall composition) make every single room, corridor and vista, even some very mundane ones, extremely captivating and memorable.
I bet that anyone could draw a fairly accurate map of the RE1's mansion or RE2's cop station after a single play through. That's how powerful the pre-rendered BGs are.

Make no mistake: such effect can be achieved with real-time 3D visuals as well. Most nu-devs just cannot, or do not want to limit the camera controls to achieve such beautiful aesthetics.

You posted an example I would've used to illustrate why pre-renders typically sucked, as FFVII was one of the most garish contrasts on the entire fucking PSX.

Sounds like you have very bad eye for artistry and cinematography. FF7 is gorgeous, and the BGs hold up.

It's gorgeous until you actually play it and there's tons of artifacting on the pre-renders and all the characters look like they aren't even apart of the same world.

Those artifacts are not visible on the CRT television hardware, that was the default television type consumers used, and devs designed their stuff for.

The realtime character mismatch is a valid yet unrelated argument, that everyone already could see 30 years ago. The tech wasn't quite there, yet the results still worked great.
Players got both extremely detailed "3D" environments, and the actually interactive bits and bobs were clearly visible at all times, thus guiding the player onwards.

Ease of readability is something many modern games actually struggle with, resulting an overuse of onscreen prompts and other forms of spoonfed handholding.

Again, using FF7, the game that had a literal button for showing what is and isn't a door, is not good for your argument.

>Again, using FF7, the game that had a literal button for showing what is and isn't a door, is not good for your argument.
An optional button, mind you.
The game works just fine without the guidance. You still have to remember that this was 1997. People were literally still playing on their SNES and Genesis during those days. 3D in any form was a new and novel thing, thus requiring some extra guidance and tutoring.

This still does not negate the cinematic quality of the FF7's pre-rendered frames. The world is lush and detailed, extremely fascinating to explore, with no two rooms or areas ever looking the same. This was a phenomenal upgrade from the Tileset-based RPGs people were used to up until that point, and it's extra impressive considering that Squaresoft managed that with SNES era technology.

I think its worth mentioning that REmake on Steam is more washed out and is darker than the original on Gamecube.
