They did indeed make "a billion" of them, the delayed the console an entire year to make sure they have millions of units in stock on launch. Normally the console was ready for shipping by early-mid 2024. Maybe as early as late 2023. But that means they have done nothing but churn out Switch 2 hardware for like the last 12-18 months, all for launch day.

However, backwards compat. may not have been fully finished yet, so they definitely also delayed to make sure (almost) every Switch 1 game works on it from launch day on, that also was part of the reason for the delay.

The console is too fucking expensive, I get it the performance received a significant bump and they are probably being fleeced by Nvidia but it's absolutely too much considering who normally buys Nintendo consoles. The average parent or normie is gonna look at it and see a more expensive Switch, they're not gonna think of all the TFLOPS, and the games shown are sure as fuck not gonna convince them, MK World just looks like the previous Mario Kart and Donkey Kong looks like mobile slop. You can't ask $500 for what is an incremental update, Nintendo is not Apple.

Nintendo released a ton of units. It seems they weren't exaggerating when they said they'd do that. So really the only difference between this and all previous system launches is this actually had enough to meet that initial demand instead of running into massive shortages and backlogs.
However, the fact they're still readily available is not super great for its future despite the big number. It just means that initial demand has already capped out. Whether or not it continues to sell to anyone who isn't a diehard or scalper is the real question. The holidays will be interesting.

Maybe my city is different or something, but all the stores around here have been completely sold out since launch.
