I wouldn't go that far.
Probably the best 3D Metroid.
But Super Metroid is on another stupid level of masterpiece.
I'll tell you I had an epiphany about it a few months ago. After playing the original Metroid II.
Samus gives the baby Metroid to the GFed scientists at the start of the game, trying to shed any feelings of motherly attachment to the infant.
Throughout the game, you keep encountering examples of baby animals and their parents.
>the shinespark tutorial bird and its eggs >the little wall jump tutorial monkeys>the hidden turtle in Maridia and its babies, which you can ride up to a missile tank>Draygon and its babies which take it into the sand after you kill it>the little version of Kraid outside Kraid's lairSo there are all these extremely subtle reminders to Samus, and you the player, of the connection between Samus and the baby metroid
So when it sacrifices itself for Samus at the end, it feels so weighty: the whole game has been reminding you of parental connection
It accomplishes all of this without a single cutscene except for the intro. It's all done through gameplay.
And this is decades before anything like the Last of Us or Death Stranding
All on top of it being a layered masterpiece of art direction, music, and gameplay to boot.
Super Metroid really might be the best game ever made.
