PSX and PS1 are both valid.
PSX was its internal code name, PS1 differentiates it from PS2 retroactively.
PS one is a different product, and PS is a family of consoles, but more to the point nobody ever said "the PS" back in the day. They always said "Playstation" or "PSX"

It was commonly known as PSX or Playstation way before the PSOne came out. PS1 wasn't used, maybe PS. PSone was obviously the cute mini playstation. When the PSX was shown in a magazine I recall it being pointed out that the naming scheme was weird given people called the playstation "PSX" as well.
Was it a valid name? Who gives a flying fuck. It's what people and media called it.
