Why does Japan vilify the fuck out of this guy? He was just a duelist who did his job for a living before some lazy caveman with a wooden plank showed up to destroy his life.

Miyamoto Musashi is one of Japan's first mortal Chuunis, up there with Susan-o in cultural importance. The Chuuni spirit is extremely important to the Japanese and is a long-honored tradition, so they hold pretty firmly to it, not to mention they're very attached to Musashi's brand of blade autism as well. As such since Kojiro is was someone that Musashi potentially overcame, he must take up the mantle of villain to make the heroic Musashi look better.

I was never under the impression that guy was a villain in the Vagabond manga. Just seemed to be a swordsman who was purposely made out to be the antithesis to Musashi. the ying to the yang.

Vagabond's an atypical portrayal of him, though the OP does use Vagabond Kojiro's appearance.

Wouldn't you say it's a more fair portrayal of Kojiro? He isn't necessarily a villain as much as he represents a natural almost untouchable genius that destiny is pulling Musashi towards. Whereas Musashi is talented but rough around the edges and through each victory gets closer to having to ultimately face his destiny. I'm certain him defeating Kojiro would have been a parallel to him overcoming ego and this transcending himself. Which I think is a pretty good way of chronicling Musashi's journey. Though I'm not as knowledgeable of Musashi as you seem to be.

Even in Samurai Warriors they make Kojiro into a villainous type for barely any reason. They always portray him as some pale faced snake man when he was just a guy doing his job and was even civil and courteous to Musashi prior to the famous Ganryujima duel.

Instead Musashi shows up, screams abuse at Kojiro after being told he was late for the duel, openly disrespects him, grabs the oar and whacks him over the head with it.

Then he has the fucking balls to say in his memoirs when he was an old man "Sasaki was the greatest swordsman i ever fought!" that one guy you insulted and cruelly murdered.

He was an officiated duelist who worked for the Shogunate. He wasn't a criminal.

Pretty sure acting like a retard to cause emotional impalance in your opponent in order to create an opening was Musashi's whole shtick, he did that every time he had to duel someone.

I figured it's because there is zero evidence he was real. He is just the concept of the perfect swordsman that has to be tricked to death.
