How the fuck was Undertale so popular to the point of being one of the biggest indie games of all times while at the same time the total playercount peaked at merely 11k? This doesn't make sense, the game would be a flop even for indie standards yet it's one of the most well known games of all time.

Compare it with Stardew Valley. You would think both games would be equal in numbers since both are genre defining games. Yet Stardew Valley sold more on Steam than Undertale. And even more surprisingly: Undertale has more merchandise than Stardew Valley.

There's no way a game as big as Undertale got where it is just by piracy alone.

Because it was not a flavour of the month release, player count peaked 3 months after release. Millions of people played it but at different times.

You're looking at the chart from the perspective of looking at the singular peak, which isn't nearly as relevant for small indie games especially those released 10 years ago.
The chart you're showing, shows that a 10 year old singleplayer non GAAS game with a max playtime of maybe... 15-20 hours for all routes still has 3000 people hourly.
Do you not get how impressive that is?

thats still high playercount for cheap short indie

the game has more fagottry around it discussing it than playing, its not a long game with high replay value like rpgs or r-lites or autism simulators. so you get a perception of it being way more popular than its player-base actually is, its the same ~200 autists talking about it daily, its very far from being a 'big' indie player/sales wise

>You would think both games would be equal in numbers since both are genre defining games
Stardew received multiple huge updates and it's biggest peaks happened years after it's launch.
It's peaks are huge because everyone who bought stardew over time came back consistently for each of the big updates, causing higher and higher peaks of playercount
It's also an "endless" game where there is no set end goal, and also has multiplayer.
In comparison to Undertale which did receive some updates, but nothing even close to Stardew's major patches

they also give it away or sell it for pennies all the time and its a kind of game you can casually play for 2000 hrs in the background so of course it has high playercount

wasn't steam exclusive at release
gaming has gotten more mainstream since, especially indie gaming
wasn't hyped up at release, was more of something that built momentum over time

Undertale came out like 10 years ago, and since then the Undertale "community" shrank down to a bunch of furries and trannies.

The people arguing that it's because it's an older game are retards. Skyrim had 287k in 2011.

The real answer is that UT is and always has been a piece of shit game with an extremely vocal fanbase of trannies, tumblrites and so on.

Show me. because as far as I can see skyrim had 50k at launch in 2011, which again, would be listed as a flop for a AAA with millions in dev costs if it released today.

Undertale, the game, is massively overrepresented in any metric of popularity that isn't cold hard facts. The vast majority of the fan base are extremely vocal secondaries. The earthbound fan excited to play for the first time? They are fans of undertale now.
The first time I ever interacted with the undertale "fanbase" was also the first time I interacted with reddit, and this was when they were raiding gamefaqs. I'm not really sure why the it isn't considered blasphemous to talk about the game here, considering how much users here cry about reddit and undertale being reddit in game form.

> Deltarune got 6 times the numbers of Undertale
That's precisely the anon's point you fool.

Undertale wasn't a hotly anticipated game. The people who had eyes on it thank to the kickstarter demo were in a small minority in the grand scheme of things. Most people ended up playing it a little while after release because they sooner or later caught wind about it being this really good indie title. This prevented Undertale from having some massive release date activity peak. Unlike Deltarune Chapters 3 and 4, which everyone was on board the hype train for and anticipating its release ensuring a shit load of people were going to be playing it upon its release on steam.

Undertale was watched a lot. Also it gradually rose to popularity since it's a game without advertising, while Deltarune on the flipside already has its fans, which explains its way more explosive launch

undertale didn't launch exclusively on steam I think there was a website that you could play it on for free. the steam version was released later as something optional to buy if you wanted to support toby or something. The games relevance can be better measured by the amount of big youtubers(pewdiepie etc.) that played the game exposing an audience probably larger than multiple countries to it in the span of a couple weeks. Further that exposure didn't directly translate into the game being played either because its mostly a story game so watching it is almost as good as playing it... but i have a feeling this is bait

Stardew is magnitudes more popular, but also another aspect is that Undertale is legitimately a 6-12hr game for most people, while Stardew can last extremely long, so players are going to not drop it nearly as fast

Undertale is not actually popular. I don't personally know a single person that played it. The average person has no clue it even exists. Even at its peak the fanbase did not actually play it they just read wikis and watched streams.

Are you anons all retarded? Do you know that Twitch and YouTube exist? Most of Undertale fans found out about it through YouTube first, watched the whole playthrough and THEN later on played the game.
