I miss the late 90s and early 2000s point and click adventure games
Why? They havn't gone anywhere. Go play them.
I miss the 90s jokes, voice acting and writing. I donโt miss being stuck for a week because the solution to advance is too non sensical
>>712628553 (OP)It really was a different time https://youtu.be/gGEBQDfJ6gA
>>712628890Can't be understated how much of a difference between then and now it is to have the net to turn to when you get genuinely stuck

anyone else really enjoy the update?
now to wait another 6 months to a year
>>712628553 (OP)And just like RTS, they're never coming back because the money train went elsewhere.
>>712629078To play the devilโs advocate, the net has turned us into low attention span freaks who canโt handle frustration or boredom. But those games were way too illogical, mostly because they were very short so they needed to make the game longer by forcing you to do action possible, or to pay for a strategy guide
>>712629376Game? Image search gives me nothing and I only know one other early access point and click.
i really need to go back and finish sunset hills also
>>712629852it's a loli sex game
sorry to disappoint you
>>712629794I always approached bullshit puzzles with the doubt-benefit that the designer just didn't appreciate how the chain of actions they came up with in their heads may not be as intuitive as they assumed it is
For me, it's the Runaway trilogy
>>712630697It is a huge shame, but I'd rather the studio remain alive honestly. After Yesterday it seemed like things were bad and they almost closed down after their next game failed to get kickstarted(?). I believe Blacksad sold rather well.
>>712631096Yesterday was extremely short and had absolutely no charm to it, so in my opinion, things turning for worse for them was only logical. As for Blacksad, I personally haven't played it, but from a glance at reviews, positives seem to come from the (well-known) source material rather than the game itself.
>>712630108Most reviews for that game complain that the game is unfinished and that the last few chapters are going to be releases separately as paid DLC. That sounds shitty
>>712630697 Yeah, it's heartbreaking watching studios like Pendulo get ground into dust by market realities. They had a real identity and styleโyou could spot one of their games a mile away, with that Euro comic vibe and expressive characters. Then industry pressure turns them into walking dead trying to ape trends that already peaked years ago. At least Runaway 2 and 3 still hold up if you're willing to put up with the moon logic.
>>712633598For me, it's their soundtracks
https://youtu.be/XmkWO4LcyKc
>>712628553 (OP)I forget how good Broken Sword 1 and 2 looked. Jesus.
>>712629710I don't know. I'd say P&C simply handled modern day transition differently from RTS. And if you want to be pedantic unlike the latter they never stopped being developed albeit on a small indie level.
>>712628553 (OP)Motherfucking Discworld Noir. Somehow a criminally overlooked game that Pratchett himself played and loved.

>>712628553 (OP)I miss them too, but they were essentially a combination of multiple things that seem to have died out: sharp writing, good puzzles and distinct art.
>>712635646and an audience with an attention span.
Early nineties game so it doesn't fall into OP's range, but I played Conquests of the Longbow about a year ago now and I still keep thinking about it once every few days. Such a cool game.
>>712636152yes this is something I've even noticed in myself. With the increase in social media im so scatterbrained its hard to even read a book lately.
>>712630310Based.
I recommend The Black Mirror trilogy and Yesterday games (these were made by pendulum studios too I think)
>>712631096Yesterday had a great villain the nerd suddenly singing that son and showing he was the one burning people was kino, he really looked like he was the mc
Sequel when?
>>712635137>albeit on a small indie levelThe fact that beloved classics from the 90s were actually AAA projects of their time is something I think many gloss over. The genre was thriving because it was mainstream and popular at the time, which allowed lesser games to be made too. Times have changed, and so did the mainstream attention shift to other things. Now it's all small literally who indie games, more often than not with very low production quality. Same story with RTS. They are essentially "dead" genres, even if some people still try to make new games. I'm just saying it in a matter of fact manner.
>>712636953Yes, but to compare mainstream of those days to today is a bit silly. Scale and scope are vastly different.
>>712628553 (OP)The new turn-based "totally not jrpg" western jrpgs are the ones that continued the dialogue style.
Except they replaced the wit with sex and more drama.
>>712637203I'm not comparing, I'm just saying that the 90s will never come back. Even early 00s seem like a pipe dream now.
Wadjet Eye is single-handedly keeping them alive.
>>712629078FUCK pixel hunting and FUCK retarded combinations. The rubber duck puzzle from the longest journey still makes me seethe to this day
>>712635207discworld noir is the game the wolf among us wishes it was
>>712637846If I had to choose between rubber duck and Dreamfall shit we got later, I would absolutely choose the rubber duck 120%.
>enjoyed Monkey Island 1 and 2, Day of the Tentacle, and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis as a kid
>never played the Sam and Max ones I probably have on steam, or the cgi skeleton mexicans one
>vaguely remember there's some point-and-click on steam where you journal your deductions about supernatural mysteries, like the poor guy in the trailer who burst into flames unprompted
What do I play, I'm so bored and lonely
>>712640656Harvester. And after finishing it play Sanitarium.
I am a game dev who loves this genre but it sells pretty poorly. How can I make one that sells well?
>>712640937Easy: travel back it time.
The Longest Journey was also a good one, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream as well, I don't know if Myst counts, I'm stuck on Riven. Thimbleweed Park was... okay
>>712640918Are they scary...
>>712640937make the next Leisure Suit Larry, anon
>>712641267I think those krauts still have the license, unfortunately.
>>712629376Game? It looks interesting
>>712641136>Are they scary...Depends, are you a pussy?
>>712640937I could see some point and click eventually getting some indie FOTM cred. Fill it with lesbians and rape and quirk chungii and hope for the best
>>712641385Are you the anon I replied to? I didnt mean to literally make LSL, but a point and dick adventure sharing some of its dna with the former.
If you are a dev, let the idea stew for a few months.
>>712642139They're more creepy than anything, but there are a few segments where creepiness creeps over to being more horror like. I'm not a pussy, so I can't even begin to imagine how well a pussy would handle those.
>>712642323Frankly, making a Larry-like game is not easy as you would think due to a simple fact: it has to be actually funny, which IS the most important part. This is why the series went down the shitter once Al Lowe was out of the picture. He just wanted to make people laugh, everyone else saw it as some crass sort of thing and proceed making a bad mockery of it.
>>712642532I'm a big strong boy, I won't get scared... probably. As long as it's not something hard to look at
>>712640918While i like Harvester, i dont think its correct to suggest to anyone. That game is mean spirited, even tho - funny as hell.
>>712645386If I don't suggest it to anyone, then how are they supposed to find out about it?
