It is not great if you enjoy the secrets, exploration, and openness of Souls games.
The devs decided to put all their budget into crafting a tight linear adventure rather than spreading themselves too thin with a bunch of branching paths, secret areas, or rewards for exploration. I think it was the best choice for the budget they had, but can't help wondering what a fully realized open version of the game would have been like.
