They're the product of a very new industry that grew exponentially before having the chance to mature. It's also an industry that's entirely focused on producing expensive toys rather than "art".
The creators of "classics" were just absolute amateurs throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks. The quality of the end product was more often than not determined by sheer luck and a combination of fortunate coincidences rather than raw talent or vision.
In fact, "vision" never gets through, what you buy is almost always the result of a billion compromises. I can appreciate when the stars align and the result is good, but that doesn't mean old school devs (or any devs for that matter), deserve my "respect".
As a matter of fact, I don't respect them or their "vision" and will always try to mod their creations to better fit and reflect my tastes.
