The combat is literally just MGRR with even more options and people hail that as one of the greatest action games of all time. I think /v/'s catalog for action games is just dmc, bayonetta and ninja gaiden when hundreds of action games have been made over the decades each with their own varying qualities. MGR has a really simple combat system but within that simplicity there's a lot of interesting stuff going on. Enemy encounters are varied and force you to think about what enemies are doing and even as one of the early parry-heavy games the parry isn't "press the defend button to win" since especially later on in the game most enemies move out of the range of your counter slash. MGR is designed around mobs of enemies and measuring distance. Seeing high level MGR players do crazy dodges with Defensive Offensive works because the game's fundamentals are solid.
The depth in a combat system isn't necessarily defined by what the player is able to do. Games like God Hand and DMC1 have depth in spite of the limited move sets.

Soulstice reminds me a lot of PS3 era action games specifically. It has the dreaded color-coded enemies like DmC but the mechanic is actually well thought out in Soulstice - you can use any weapon on them so long as you have a color-coded field up and while initially the two separate colors seems unnecessary, they start mixing together blue and red enemies which makes swapping fields important.
It has similarities to Bayo in that your best options are rewards for not getting hit and give you access to both strong AoE attacks and your DT.
There are huge amounts of enemies in an encounters and they can be very mobile and aggressive and a lot of the enemies do have armor so Soulstice is generally less combo-oriented, which might be part of why it didn't catch on as much. It's trying to have that "Berserk/Claymore" feel of danger.
It's a very solid game but very much doing its own thing.

It's that marketing is the strongest factor to a games' sales. Eyes on product is more relevant than quality when you get to scale. It's why notorious flops like South of Midnight and Forspoken still have higher peak player counts and higher sales than smaller games even if they had a far more positive reception.
A good game relying on word of mouth is fighting an uphill battle. For all the flops of 2024, most of them still sold more units and would have higher peak player counts simply through exposure.
I compared Stellar Blade to Oneechanbara but there are way more games in the same general field as them that consistently do small numbers and the only real difference is that Stellar Blade had more marketing and also it puts on airs that it's more than coombait so it's less off-putting to normalfags who think they're above ecchi slop.

Because even igoring phenomenons like review bombing, consumers and critics approach game from different angles. A good critic tries to judge game based on all of its aspects while consumer ignores the parts that he doesn't care for. Think of all the people who skip all the cutscenes for example. Those people would rate a game with terrible writing but good game play higher than a critic who tries to experience the game as a whole.
