Lysithea is an actual example of the sad backstory buff that most of the cast is accused of abusing. The common refrain is that gameplay and story rest on a sliding scale. And that the gameplay got more of the cookies while they didn't care about the narrative. I will 50% cosign on this criticism. A criticism I personally have about 3H is how frontloaded it is. Unlike other FEs, 3H starts you with the majority of your army and you have to grind away to recruit the rest to fill out your ranks. So I can understand that KT would want the majority of the students to be recruitable. But something that they at least partially recognized during Houses and more clearly recognized during Hopes is that certain characters kind of have attachments to their homes and that they'd need really good reasons to betray their friends and family.

I commonly see people justify Felix joining the Empire because that's a scenario where his hatred of Faerghan chivalry won out and he lost hope in Dimitri. I personally think that's stupid for several reasons but it is at least a reason. What's not a good reason is Ingrid making a decision to kill her friends and family and throw her sense of chivalry, a core belief that she bases her grief towards Glenn on, into the mud because she decides her devotion to Byleth, whom she's known for less than a year, now takes precedence over everything she's ever known and love her entire life. That is fucking ridiculous and it kind of stains the entire recruitment system. Just like with most things in 3H, it's an example of how too many options can be a bad thing.

This is really the core of most issues with Awakening onward Fire Emblem. Both in gameplay and in narratives, they need to fucking scale back the agency we have. Old Fire Emblem characters had so little opportunity for characterization compared to modern ones and they used it so well when the most you'd get out of a lot of them was in optional, obnoxious to grind for support conversations. Open ended mechanics kills mechanical identity and the need to make every character available in multiple ways kills characterization identity. Well the thing I appreciate is that his betrayal is rooted in his own history. I harp on Ingrid's betrayal being stupid because the source of it is Byleth, whom she's known for a few months. Ashe's betrayal is rooted in his loyalty to Lonato, his adoptive father. Ashe loves Lonato. He joined the academy explicitly because he wanted to be like Lonato. But just like in Houses, Ashe didn't realize that his values and Lonato's values had diverged the second Christophe was executed. Lonato is in this game for revenge against the Church that killed his son for a crime he didn't commit. And he's willing to work with any group that gets him that. But Ashe is still pure. He wants to be a virtuous hero, like the stories he read.
