Everyone tried chasing the Golden Dragon that is WoW's autistic playerbase and never managed to make it work, because those retards are stuck on their cocaine treadmill and will never leave it.
The ones that tried something different either flopped hard or managed to carve out a respectable but small niche.

But now that most gamers are already playing competitive multiplayer games, the itch that MMOs used to scratch, having real people to play with, is being soaked up by that. So the MMO market is basically dead. On top of that, no one has made one with combat that isn't dated tab targetting trash because most of them either thought that was essential to an MMO or are still hanging on from when that was a technical hurdle that couldn't be crossed.

tl;dr MMOs are a product of their time and people chasing that high have nostalgia goggles so thick they can't see that.

I think the genre is in a similar position as RTS: the mainstream perception of the genre has shifted to a very specific kind of game (AoE/*Craft and WoW-like respectively) and it is incredibly perilous to try to challenge that market, since your game is almost inevitably going to compare unfavorably, as the existing games are just that damn good. As a matter of fact it's trivial to improve upon WoW in some ways (like featuring challenging endgame content relative to legacy-versions, or not having the baggage of a dozen obsolete and irrelevant expansion content, hyperinflation, and lore-rape relative to neo-WoW) but the ways that matter - moment-to-moment gameplay experience - have their standards set extremely high.

And going outside the subsubgenre, well, it's going to be difficult convincing suits to fund anything "new" and given high-profile failures (of games that were fundamentally unsound trash) inherently risky. Personally I'm quite certain that social media or people being used to online games or whatever hasn't diminished the inherent appeal of what MMOs can be, but, you know, it takes more than an idea to make a good game, it needs execution too, which in most cases means large-ish budget.
