I traveled across the entire galaxy, without a freighter. it took me 7 years.
I have stared into the abyss and it stared back.
has anyone else had their mind opened by this ultimate achievement?

Why would I play elite, the gameplay lacks depth, flight is bad, combat is little more than point and click auto aim, walking is poorly thought out and tacked on, and finally loading screens.
Nothing about it seems fun.

I'm still on my way to sagitarius A. I don't play often and scan every system I go through, sometimes do exobiology for madz money later on. It'll be a while until I get there. I departed shortly before the mandalay released so I only have a jump range of 36~40 LY depending on how much fuel I have. Turning is also slow as fuck, I should have engineered that before going. It's not really important as I do only exploration but man do I dislike that slow turn rate. I passed through a JEW system last time. Nothing of value was found

He means a fleet carrier, which is like a small mobile space station. (Fun fact: Some space stations in Elite were actually jump capable and were built before they moved under their own power to their permanent location, after which the jump drives were disabled and removed - ie: Jaques Station in Colonia). You can use them to get repairs and hand in the data you collect, where before you had to carry your own limited supply of repair modules and if your ship blew up from, say, impacting a surface too hard, your data was all lost, which after spending years in the black could amount to billions of credits.

Who's the coward? The person in the freighter trying to run a gauntlet of players in min-maxed combat ships that don't have any interest in the cargo you may or not be carrying and just want to blow you up for the fun of it? It's not like there's a challenge, popping fat merchant ships that even with lots of defenses will last only seconds against such opponents. Gankers will often avoid other PvPers, and congregate in systems where newer players frequent to get their first bit of engineering done. It essentially makes it impossible for a cargo ship to reach its destination as the camping ganker will blow them up every time no matter what they do. That's not a fun interaction for them.

The next update, called 'Vanguards', is set to come out this summer (late June/early July) and sounds like it will incorporate in-game mechanics that will make squadrons able to share resources directly instead of having to buy and swap cargo or things like that. There will be a communal bank, the aforementioned Squadron fleet carrier that will be accessible to all and have a shared bank and a store of 'rent-a-ships' that any member can use. Details haven't been completely released yet but it will probably incorporate what you're looking for from the sounds of it.

Regular ships gather plasma by orbiting close to stars (if they have a fuel scoop). They can also be refueled instantly when they land at any station. Fleet carriers (what OP calls a 'freighter' for some reason) use tritium as fuel, which can be bought from stations or mined from asteroids if you're out away from civilization

Pretty much making all the old ones obsolete. They're actually releasing the long-awaited Panther Clipper (mk 2) with the Vanguards update this summer, which will make the other large cargo ships like the Type-9 and Imperial Cutter all but useless (the cutter may survive if it's better as an cargo ship with weapons for dealing with pirate or just running since it's fast). The supercruise overcharge drives make them superior anyway since they can travel through the deep systems much faster using less fuel

They can't let the folks making Scam Citizen have all the fun. Word is they turned around their financial woes and their games are turning profits again and they have the next 2 years of content and updates mapped out. They've fixed a number of longstanding issues over the last year or so after they restructured and started communicating better with the fanbase. Engineering for example is no longer the toxic grind it used to be.

Third party tools are still the best way to find good trade routes. I don't think they'd implement something in game because a lot of effort has actually gone into those tools and they wouldn't want to make them obsolete. With engineering, they made gathering the materials a lot easier. Signal sources contain enough to fully fill a type of grade 5 manufactured materials, material rewards for missions were increased, the revamped PowerPlay sends out 'gift packages' full of materials when you gain levels with your Power, the sources for data materials were juiced up, and they took the randomness out of the actual engineering rolls, so that now level 1 always needs one roll up to level 5 always needing 5 rolls instead of the old 7-10 bs.

They also increased the module storage from 200 to 600 so you can put away all those engineered weapons and modules without having to store them on spare ships and swap them in and out when you want to use them.
