So where should I start playing Touhou as a newcomer to the series? Can you just hop in on any game or is there a reason to start at a specific one?

I've got some experience with CAVE games and other shmups like Raiden already so I'm not a total beginner to this shit.

Downloads need to be found though, you may want to consider 5 (PC-98 emulation) or 6 (Windows, but patches are required which are included in most online downloads)

I found 7 much easier than 6, but 6 isn't that hard either. I think you have enough experience to manage.
THprac is a tool I'd recommend for improving the in-game practice modes, you can improve instantly with that shit.

You can realistically start with any game since the plot is paper thin. People tend to recommend gimmick free, easy entries or those with simple ones, like >>712666432
Then you can kind of chain them all, that'll keep you busy for a good while. 19 games (20 soon) if you download PC-98, 3 of which are VS Shmups (if you've heard of Twinkle Star Sprites, it's that. People host 9 every now & then). You also have 6 spinoffs that are still Danmaku styled (4 photo games, 1BM and FW), 6 fighting games if you're into these (12.3 is the only one with an "active" scene) and 1 weird boss rush action game.
PCB & IN are both, at least for Normal, fairly slow, more micrododge focused entries. If after playing you'd like something a bit faster, EoSD and MS (5, on PC-98) are a bit more frantic. If you like games with exploitable scoring that rewards you, HSiFS & seasons hijinks might be fun.

And second, the games are low-quality garbage, play literally any other shmup. It will especially bother you since you have played CAVE and already got your fill of how good danmaku looks like.

Touhou isn't super good as a shmup or anything, but it's good for some easy clears and the music is usually nice enough to stick around. If not for the boss patterns and the music, Touhou as a game would be nothing, but as a series it would still have cute girls.

the photos games are an underrated starting point unless it's VD or 100BM. if you're not ready to tackle 6 stages all in one go, you might like the photo games better because you don't have to start all over again if you fail
