The early game is too railroaded
It has the best route variety in the genre, contender for the best non-linear+interconnected exploration in games as a whole. But that only starts after you get the mantis claws, during which its very railroaded and sometimes even unrewarding without unintended skips
Id propose the following solution
>Give a different, interesting reward to brooding mawlek, like a charm (the mask shard only becomes relevant a few hours in)
>the charm can be used to do things a little differently in some not-too-obvious way, maybe go to elder baldur early, or get some extra nice stuff
That could quite possibly spice up replays nicely

is that even really an issue when you get the mantis claws in like 15-20 minutes when you know where to go?
Besides, they need to railroad you at the start a little bit so normalfags don't get lost and drop the game instantly, but what am I saying? They somehow got lost in the crossroads and quit anyway.

The Pantheon of Hollowest is too high a hurtle to be gating a cinematic ending behind it.
To be clear, I've beaten it, but I remember how shitty it felt that I couldn't complete all the content that the game had to offer.

I'll never understand this take.
I've always enjoyed going back to an area that had previously been inaccessible after earning a new skill. The anticipation of what you'll find is half the fun. It's the gameplay loop that makes metroidvanias so good.

Charm system is dogshit that should've never been introduced to this genre. It's overly restrictive and robs you of satisfaction of getting permanently stronger because you can only equip a tiny part of them.
Some locations are just incredibly dull and go on forever without anything interesting happening in any way.

fairly weak structure
metroid does it better when entire zones are locked off behind an upgrade, from the varia suit to power bomb to some dumb door you need a specific laser to go through : they are presented to you early and they stick with you until you can get through
HK has this but in a very limited capacity, and it's not nearly as impactful
also if you have upgrades in your game you probably want to have the character model change over time to give a sense of progression
guess it could be a matter of preference

I have a feeling they cut a lot of shit before shipping it : some upgrades like diving in acid are extremely situational and underwhelming

Isma's tear probably would have been used to swim in the lava in this cut area, which supposedly would've been similar in scale to the city of tears.
