Nintendo, among other video game brands, replaces religious cults in terms of ritual repetitive behavior and myth/world understanding for an alienated and confused youth. Due to secularization and lack of educated understanding of previous myths and traditions, they attach themselves to the closest thing that resembles it - you see this with otakus and comic fags as well. The similarities between the brands' characters and lore with real-life myths plays an important role, as due to sheer ignorance and naivety, they get lured into thinking they're original works, projecting themselves into what are essentially watered-down myths meant to sell virtual toys. Since they consume most of this as a young person, and in some cases it's all they know, it stays with them until adulthood, never quite growing out of it, mostly due to nostalgia and even due to world meaning. The rituals involve consuming the product (eucharist-like), cosplaying as the brand's pantheon of created characters (reenactment of myth/mystery school plays), producing fanfiction and fanart (sacred text and art), talking about the brand, it's products and fanlore in social media/irc/message boards (going to church).
