I can't think of many games where humans are kinda' weak, but in the ones where they are, it's because they're generalists in a group game, and in a group, it's better to be a specialist than a generalist. This happens because the games are made by humans and so they consider humans to be "normal," which means other races are going to be balanced around that, resulting in humans being the best at nothing. You could be a human mage, but why not be the gnome mage with a boost to your Intelligence? Yes, the gnome has weaknesses, but you can just avoid them and let your party members cover it for you. It's not an actual downside.

A lot of people claim Tolkien started this, but humans being jack of all trades wasn't even true in his writing, he described humans as strong, ambitious and masters of horses.
