It is fine, but i kinda think it is the opposite of EB, I feel like M3 only starts with Chapter 4. By comparison it feels like EB starts to lose momentum around Summer. Half the reason people obsess over M3 is definitely the CAN'T HAVE factor.

I feel like Mother 3 is probably more about Nostalgia and how it feels to see things change around you then that stuff. It sounds Psuedo as fuck to say, but it is kind of a "Old Man" game, even the reason Porky is "Modernizing" things is arguably a tinge of nostalgia and wanting things to be like when HE was a kid (IE: Earthbound) and doing shit like making tazmilly a ghost time kinda seesm like it wants to invoke that feeling rather then just "Urbanization Bad".

It takes like half an hour to actually reach the point you're playing as Flint and really start doing anything, and the game doesn't really kick off until Chapter 4 or so

Its this. Its a game about things changing around you and becoming unrecognizable from how you remembered them and the destruction of tradition (capitalism does play a role in this but its not the overall theme). Itoi lived through a time when Japan changed rapidly. It also seems like he hates busywork, which is all Japan is now a days.

Ohiobound is woke and ruins itoi's vision from mother 2 (or milquetoast 2 as I call it). Although clearly a decline from the perfection of the original and nowhere near as bad as milquetoast3 the localization or should I say WOKEalization does it no favors.

Mother 3 has a more expansive narrative rather than dumping exposition right at the end, although Mother 3 does that too. Its more fun to "play" too but since its more story focused, you have to slog through a lot of shit before it gets going and it kills replayability, not that either of the other games are fun to replay either.
Mother 1 was a strange game. It was extremely boring 90% of the way through but the final bits on Mt. Itoi left a lasting impression that I didnt think was still possible at 30 years old.
Mother 2 has the best sense of adventure
Mother 3 is....more grand scale, I guess. It has the best music.

people online talked about it like the second coming of christ and I ended up really disappointed
the porky boss fight was cool, most bosses are actually okay
the weird drug island was also interesting, it wasn't an overdone trope when this game released
the rest is either alright or boring
I'm told they cut out a lot of stuff out of this game but maybe they should have held off on releasing it at all if the "full game" was supposed to be as grandiose as I heard it was supposed to be
the fuck was that ending anyway

Great game, but gimped by GBA hardware. It's basically a sparksnotes summary of the N64 version. Its the premier example of a game that SHOULD get a remake in order to deliver on its original vision. Kills me that we have bootlocking fanboys who think it's perfect the way it is, vs a compromised downgrade of a much better game. Anyone who tends to think EB64 would be bad, tends to be a retard who can't handle early 3D graphics (despite the fact the final version's graphics would have been better, had the 3D version been finished.)

Should have pushed development to GC instead of GBA.

Nah, superficially trying to copy Earthbounds graphic style only goes so far. Plenty of scenes we could see in the OG trailers that had better animations, camera work, and atmosphere are turned into bland, soulless caricatures where these basic little sprites just stare soullessly at you in a flat way.

No. I love 2D graphics as well, but the initial 3D presentation would have been objectively better. The Earthbound artstyle, and attempts to copy it - are objectively more of a Reddit hipster thing.

It's like that all over, but especially video games. They even dolly it up with a certain word, pic related. Any time someone tells you a game has a lot of 'content', packed with content or hours of 'content', you better believe it's just a bunch of padding, grinding and fetch quests reskinned twenty times. They had interviews in the EB64 days and screenshots of stuff that were never in the game. Only a retard would think the poor pacing and an enormous text dump for the back story is deliberate. Let me guess, you thought the Triforce fetch quest in Wind Waker was planned from day one?

>the poop kraken chapter was going to be soooooo good
This but unironically.
It makes Lighter and Fuel actual characters and explains why the game gave them so much focus.
It also explains the chatty girl on the beach being such an out of place enigma in the final game.

From what we know
>Game originally opened with the Tazmily villagers gathered around a giant pile of shit that washed up on the beach wondering what kind of monster left it
>The beach with the chatty girl(Nana) was originally a entire separate town full of fishermen and this was where the opening scene took place
>Lighter, his wife(cut from the final game) and Fuel were all from that village, and so was Nana and Nana's father(cut from the final game)
>At some point Nana's father goes missing and you never see him again in the game
>During a fishing trip, Lighter, his wife, and Fuel get attacked by a giant Kraken Chimera, the same beast that the pile of shit came from
>Lighter's wife ends up getting eaten by the Kraken(It's strongly implied Nana's father got eaten too which is why he never shows up again)
>Lighter and Fuel make it back alive
>At some point in the game you were supposed to help Lighter get revenge on the Kraken
>Fuel decides to go along, or he want on his own to avenge his mother like Claus did
>Kraken goes to eat Fuel but ends up biting his shirt and suspends him in the air with his mouth(There's actual blink and you'll miss it video footage of this moment in the trailer)
>Presumably you'd fight and beat the Kraken after this saving Fuel

I'm assuming they didn't want to make an entire extra town so most of this was cut and Nana was just left there on the extremely gutted remains of the 2nd town for whatever reason.

that was the quick rundown, there's a poop kraken and a sidequest for some villagers that gives some minimal background information about them and "world builds" but in reality is just the sum of a few sentences

wouldn't shock me at all considering its Itoi and he directed 2 which had worse pacing than GBA 3. I think it's funny you're pretending anything revealed about the incomplete N64 shitfest expands on anything info dumped by Leder

I love the feeling of just running around in the world, It's surprising there aren't any other gba games with such simple yet satisfying field graphics like this game. And I loved talking to npcs and seeing them say new things after each event. Combat was a drag but I just enjoyed existing in the world i guess

Forgot to mention that Nana is said to always be looking out at sea waiting for her father to return, which is why I assume they put her in that spot in the final game. It's unclear if there was supposed to be a moment where she accepts the fact her father isn't coming back, or she was supposed to spend the rest of the game in denial just waiting at that same spot.

It's probably a controversial opinion, but I honestly wish the entire game was like those first 3 chapters.
I like the idea of each chapter being a look into the lives of different characters and how they deal with the sudden tragedy that effects them due to the Chimera attacks.

This could just be my schizo headcanon, but a lot of villagers in the game just seem to not really care about what's going on in the final game, be it the Pigmask's brainwashing, their memories being fake, or just the lack of focus they get in general, it kind of makes me think the characters that experienced loss where able to see beyond the smoke and mirrors of the fake world and become actual people again. It would be interesting if the entire game was people in the perfect utopia of the new land slowly having the illusion fall apart around them due to experiencing true sadness and empathy again and then coming together in the final chapter to face the threat.

It's been a while but IIRC
>You end up going to the final dungeon seen in the fake opening game
>You end up in a strange black void with some rain pouring down that looks like something from Yume Nikki
>You find the old lady's grandson naked crying in the middle of the void
>a house that looks like the old lady's appears and you take him in there with you
>The grandma and the dog are in there and everything seems normal until the boy starts crying and talks about how he had a dream he become a monster that killed a bunch of people

>Suddenly the dog starts talking and tells him that he wasn't dreaming and he now has to atone for his sins by taking in the souls of everyone he wronged
>You see the souls of all the monsters you collected along with humans that strangely imply to be dead people from the actual world, one mentioning he died in a war
>The boy takes in the souls of the monsters, and each one makes him more and more like a monster until he becomes the dragon seen at the beginning of the game
He tells you that he remembers being the hero and this is actually all one big time loop, he becomes the hero, kills a bunch of people, reverts back to his original form, takes the souls of the people he killed, and becomes the dragon, who remakes the world, and things begin anew
>The hero suddenly comes in and kills the dragon slicing it's head right off
The dying head of the dragon tells you that you've gain enough knowledge to attempt to break the time loop and save their world and urges you to make everything right

Everything here is still on the disc, we don't know how it exactly progressed after that, the writer has a youtube channel and went into more detail about it, saying the reason that so much weird surreal shit starts happening is because the segment where you play as that dude that gets high on shrooms in the final game was actually supposed to be an entire game mechanic where you take the mushrooms with him and go through trippy dream sequences which is how you were originally supposed to get to the moon, which is why he tells you he's been there on one of his trips before in the final game.

It's very dark and unfitting to the rest of the game, but I really like it.

Very unnecessarily dark it sounds like and clashes with the idea of being inside a game world pretty heavily
>the final game was actually supposed to be an entire game mechanic where you take the mushrooms with him and go through trippy dream sequences
There's actually weird scenes you can trigger in the forest just by eating the mushrooms at random outside the trips you're meant to see to progress. I've had a big hand come down and pick me up (just takes you to the start of the forest again) and that was definitely outside the intended sequence and I couldn't get it to trigger again so probably an easter egg remnant of that

It is dark, but I feel it's far more of an actual ending than what we got, it's heavily foreshadowed throughout the game. You never even go to the final dungeon in Fake Moon in the actual game and the hero being the grandson doesn't even really matter in the end despite the lore relating to the arrow.

Another weird thing that was cut was that part where you first go into the basement of the mansion and free the doctor, originally it was supposed to be some actual J-pop idol they wanted to guest star in the game but apparently couldn't get the rights to do it. She has entire unused dialogue that seems indicate she was supposed to be the actual real life idol that ended up in the game world. It makes me think the real world and game world crossing over was intended to be a bigger part of the game originally, it would also explain that one guard literally being Freddie Mercury.

I just assumed the people of Moon were made up of bits of info left "residually" within the game console/TV/cable connection when it comes to characters like Freddie.
>Originally it was supposed to be some actual J-pop idol they wanted to guest star in the game
Wouldn't that character just be the waitress at the cat man's restaurant? What would be the point of putting her in the basement cell? I don't see how losing whatever contract with whatever idol would effect the character's use in the plot

I'm saying the cut dialogue indicates the idol was the same real life idol that ended up in the game world, as in she remembers being isekai'd to the game world just like your character. That has huge implications for the story if true.

Concerning that ending though it seems to me like its allegory for people becoming withdrawn into world's meant to help enrich their actual lives and having the grandson's (player's counterpart) soul be trapped in this dark void and making all these claymation monsters the souls of actual people, which sounds like it could have been a guilt trip on the player like based on the example of a soldier that could easily be someone's grandfather who lived and died to make a future for them. That sounds way, way too pessimistic considering the game's ultimate message and I think the punishment for selecting Yes when asked to continue at the end (TV static/no catharsis) should be enough of a slap in the face after what you do see transpire.

That sounds like a completely different story honestly, like it is a good thing they didn't do that considering nearly everything else in the game
