This mod wasn't meant to be a celebration of the N64, it was just zoomers getting their hands on an old game and doing whatever the fuck they wanted with it. Someone was itching to add Joker but had to curve themselves and the mask came off with the shills coming out in the later updates calling the mod team out.

Nah. They had a design and they refused to use or adapt it. Smash 2 is the only era-based mod I've seen that actually went off of Lucas' Mother 64 design (albeit adapting it to Ness' Earthbound style).

I think a beta design is totally fine and fun in concept, but Smash 2's Lucas took many artistic liberties.
He just looks like GBA Lucas in his old costume and a different haircut rather than his actual old design.
Besides, Lucas in pic related was made in 2002 and it looks radically different. I think GBA is the only one that makes sense for Melee specifically.

afaik for those devices you're gonna use the mupen64plus core from retroarch or the stand alone version of it (mupen64plusfz) and change the graphical settings, that being said N64 emulation is does require a good system despite its age, you can use less demanding plugins and settings but those come with graphical glitches and worse accuracy.
