The main storyline is very linear, but it is worth playing through once. The open world opens up in Chapter 2, and it's fun for a few hours.

RDR2 was never a revisionist western, it's a soapy period drama with some rootin tootin. it's too green to be a western. a western needs to be set in a harsh climate. the only really western parts are the snowy areas and the unfinished south west areas. that being said they did a great job at recreating what burgers call "the gilded age", aka late victorian era.

I beat it today but I had to take a week break after completing the main story before starting the epilogue. Game is heavy, too long, and honestly can be slow at times. But it's still a 10/10. Nothing in recent memory comes close to it.

I gave it a fair shot after shitting on it for years, it's garbage until you get past the intro and the game opens up but then it's constantly plagued by small issues that all add up to make it miserable to play. Lots of railroading, lots of retardproof systems bumping against each other and causing friction, the story is extremely uninteresting and bloated, the characters are almost all unlikeable. World design is fucking amazing though, Saint Dennis in particular was awesome to wander around and just riding down random trails and shit was always fun. There's a brief period of a few hours when it feels like a masterpiece but then all the issues start to become apparent and crack that facade. Overall it's probably a 7/10. Worth playing but far from being worthy of the level of praise it receives.
