In Mario Kart 64 the Blue Shell isn't airborne and can trip up on its way to 1st. In Mario Kart Double Dash you can literally out-maneuver shells. In Mario Kart DS you can snake so hard that there's no way 2nd catches up to you even if you're set back by a Blue Shell near the goal.

Starting with Wii, everything is controlled and there's no cheese strategies, so everybody will get the blue shell at random to give participation trophies to inferior 2nd and 3rd runners.

That's just not true. In previous mario karts, being in first place is the easiest spot to play. You're really only getting attacked by an occasional blue shell and 2nd place if they get lucky enough to pull reds. You're outside the main pack of players who are constantly hitting eachother and being slowed down so your lead in 1st constantly grows. Mario kart world swung in the opposite direction though. It's impossible to get a significant lead and there are too many items focused on just hitting you. 1 hit and you're being chained to last place.

Yes it has, but the issue now is that there are multiple layers of tech you're expected to do for optimal speed(as opposed to just drift boosting), there are more active racers, and CPU racers are allowed to get blues. The problem with Mario Kart item design is that none of the items force improvisation or in-the-moment decision making, they just fuck you over. The only counter to a Blue Shell is a horn or a Mushroom, which are RNG. The only counter to a red shell is a banana, which is RNG. The only counter to Lightning is lol nothing get fucked. It sucks.

This has not been the case in my 15 hours with Mario Kart World. I find items to interfere less (primarily thanks to the absence of Piranha Plant) and generally there's 1 lightning bolt and 1 blue shell per race, which is the same as MK8. Yes you could randomly be struck by multiple blue shells in a match, but I feel the chance of that isn't any different than the chance of it happening in MK8.

Actually, what I feel is the biggest change is the amount of guys around 2nd, 3rd and 4th place who get the horn, a few times I've gotten struck near the front by a shell or whatever, but then that gets followed up by one or two hits from guys with horns.

Without the blue shell, who ever is in first after the initial big break away would otherwise win every time assuming everyone is competent doesn’t make too many driving mistakes.
First place almost always get good defenses from red shells and people in the middle pf the pack are all fighting each other and slowing each other down.
That was an issue with Super Mario Kart since once you got first, the game just became glorified time trials without mushrooms and with lightning strikes.

The Blue Shell solves that issue. It makes it so that 1st place can’t be too far ahead of the pack and has to interact with the other racers.
Additionally, the Blue Shell has strategy for it. It’s not like 1st place can’t do anything about it, especially in DS and DD where you can dodge a Blue by drifting at the right time.
You can drift boost in those games, you can bring a mushroom into first place and dodge using it, you can slow down intentionally to have second place take the blue, MK8 you can intentionally snipe yourself in order to use your invincibility frames to save time, you can also use a superhorn too.
And besides the superhorn, all the above either slows first place down or is a consequence of first place having been in the pack beforehand.

It's insane how courses like Sky High Sundae and Wario Stadium went from dogshit slop to some of the funnest courses in the series (imo) and ones like Airship Fortress and Wario SHipyard return about as good as they were before despite changes but then tracks like Koopa Troopa Beach and Desert Hills return as the same boring "hold A and drift" courses they always were. What this guy should have done paid attention to the mini map and slowed down in order to be right next to that DK when the blue shell came. Yeah the DK did have a Super Horn, but he didn’t know that or could have known that, and you could definitely still try catching him in the explosion too. And you could have attempted to snipe him with the banana (or blocked the shortcut).
Additionally he could have fallen off the track intentionally to use those invincibility frames to dodge the blue. He might not have won attempting either, but doing so would have made winning possible and you could say “well at least I tried”
