Bravely Second (The Hourglass) was gated behind either putting the 3DS in sleep Mode for 8 hours or buying SP Drinks with real money for an immediate top up. It was the only way to break the damage cap of 9999 in the 3DS release.

That actually screws the plot of Bravely Second up a little. I mean, they could still make a remaster and keep that plot element in as a retcon, but it was nice that it existed in Default.

Japan doesn't really like Second. One big factor being the Japanese version's sidequest had 2 endings, Good and Bad ones. The first time you always get the bad ending and you could only get the good ending if you re-did the sidequest in the 2nd loop. The localization removed this and just had all the good ends because it was one of the most hated aspects.

As far as I know, the game came out first in 2012 as just Bravely Default, and then they released a new version in 2013 called Bravely Default Flying Fairy, which is the version that was translated and brought to the west

Is it worth finishing Bravely Default 2 for any reason? I really hated that Asterisks were a transformation item, not you beating a bunch of masters of their job.

Flying Fairy was the title of the original release, For the Sequel was the title of the rerelease, but it's worth noting that it was also available as DLC for the original. And obviously you'd expect a later remaster to include the most updated content from the original unless your name is Game Freak.

Also, "For the Sequel" literally refers to the inclusion of the hourglass as Second explains that the merchant (Deneb) had to use it to travel back in time and give it to Tiz at the start of Default so that he'd fill it with the memories needed to call his soul back at the end of Second.
