Emulation is just a way for Sony, Xbox, and Nintendo to avoid the responsibility of backward compatibility and to retain leverage to sue developers if they go too far. It helps them promote the idea of not owning games because as you said, there are always some fags doing it for free. This isn't a competition, It's someone doing another person's job for free while being held by the neck. That’s why emulation should be banned. It harms the overall market.

Normalfags don't emulate, nobody cries about ownership because the vast majority doesn't mind being fucked over by corporations even if you explain it to them in detail.
Emulation is and always will be the only way to play many games because there's far too many forgotten IPs, botched ports and remakes and too many scalpers who will make sure that you can't even buy a used a copy for less than an arm and a leg.

Companies don't want to compete with old products because old products devalue their new products. They are considering cost to maintain old products vs the return on investment. Their calculations and they have deemed unprofitable to continue to support it. Making emulation illegal won't incentivize companies to officially support old games. It would just make old games unavailable to everyone they have no interest in preserving something they can't profit from. The gameboy/color has 1100 games more than 80% of those games are only available by piracy. They are abandonware. The companies many no longer exist and they ones that do no longer care about these games beyond the value of owning the IP.
