it was also light years ahead of the competition as far as performance was concerned, which is not surprising when after factoring in inflation it would be like a $1,500 console.
also because it was more or less identical to the arcade hardware (they just changed the pinout to make them incompatible but the chips on the boards were the same) it actually had a weirdly long supported life and got games up until 2004!
there was an effort to make it more affordable with a Neo Geo CD variant so they could sell CD versions of games for $50 but it didn't do all that well due to long load times, it did last long enough to get an upgraded CDZ variant but i think they only made like 30,000 of those (i have one) also the CD system only got games until 1998 or so.
