Ryukishi is an actual genius bogged down by his own insecurities towards his fanbase. All of the bad parts in Umineko only exist because he doesn't trust his readers, and he was (kind of) proven right when he saw the reception of EP2 and then later EP8.

In all fairness Umineko is a fucking mess of a series. It's too grand to successfully pull itself off and ends up floundering in a whole bunch of additional bullshit that no one cares about.

I disagree. I think it's his magnum opus and the best VN ever written. That includes Steins;Gate, Muv-Luv, White Album, Utawarerumono, Muramasa and so on. Keep in mind that I'm not saying that it's flawless or that it can stand up to the giants of literature, but it's the peak of the visual novel medium.
